Duties
Leads and performs research and development as part of the NIST microbiome and pathogen detection programs to include investigating the structure-function relationships of engineered microbial consortia and the production of reference materials, including mock communities and DNA-based materials. Develops novel molecular and cellular measurements for a wide variety of microorganisms, including bacteria, fungi and viruses. Manages, analyzes, and interprets data from a diverse set of microbial instrumentation including flow cytometry, particle counters, mass-spectrometry, liquid automation, digital PCR, and next-generation sequencing. Keeps consistent documentation and electronic data records. Leads collaborative projects including interlaboratory studies.

Qualifications
Basic Requirements
Degree: microbiology; or biology, chemistry, or basic medical science that included at least 20 semester hours in microbiology and other subjects related to the study of microorganisms, and 20 semester hours in the physical and mathematical sciences combining course work in organic chemistry or biochemistry, physics, and college algebra, or their equivalent.
OR
Combination of education and experience: courses equivalent to a major in microbiology, biology, chemistry, or basic medical science that included courses as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
In addition to the above basic requirements: All applicants must have one year (52 weeks) of the specialized experience at the GS-9 level (ZP-II at NIST). Specialized experience is defined as experience with computers, microbiology, molecular biology, metagenomics instrumentation, specifically Next-Generation Sequencing (NGS). Proficiency with various bioinformatic software tools for metagenomic analysis and bacterial, viral and/or fungal culture and preservation.
