Area Information
Cumberland Island National Seashore is the largest and southernmost of Georgia's barrier islands. Located 1-3 miles off the mainland coast, the island is 17.5 miles long, ranging from approximately a 0.5 mile to 3 miles wide, and totals 36,415 acres of which 16,850 are marsh, mud flats, and tidal creeks. The northern portion includes 9,886 acres of designated wilderness, while an additional 10,500 acres are classified as potential wilderness. Most of the island's uplands are federally owned and managed by the National Park Service. The remaining portions of the island are state owned, privately owned, or owned by other federal entities.
Cumberland Island is approximately seven miles by boat from St. Marys, Georgia (population approximately 18,521) and can only be reached by water transportation. Island visitation is serviced by a ferry that runs from the St. Marys visitor center to docks at Dungeness and Sea Camp on the island. Recreational opportunities at Cumberland Island include walking and hiking, camping, beachcombing, swimming, wildlife viewing, seeking solitude, and visiting the park's historic sites.
St. Marys, Georgia has an estimated population of 18,500 people, and was first explored by Spanish expeditions in the mid-16th century as part of the settlement of Spanish Florida. The original Spanish settlement was founded in 1566, making this the second oldest continuously inhabited European-establish settlement in the contiguous United States. St. Mary's has single family homes for sale as well as rental properties. Multiple nursing homes, senior care centers, and hospitals as well as an airport exist in St. Marys. Education opportunities include public elementary and middle schools, and there are several colleges and universities in the surrounding area.
Fort Frederica National Monument is managed by the superintendent of Cumberland Island National Seashore. Fort Frederica is known for its astonishing beauty. The area is full of Spanish moss, enormous oak trees, and large grape vines. The area was established in 1736, by James Oglethorpe, a British immigrant and general who used Frederica as a fort to protect the British colonies in Georgia and South Carolina from the Spanish settlers in Florida. He named the area after the Prince of Wales, Frederick Louis. Today what remains of Fort Frederica has become a national monument that bears archeological and geological data to the history of the area. The original fortress at Frederica was described by the Quakers as being beautiful and constructed mainly of brick. The monument includes a guardhouse, a stockade, three bastions, two storehouses and a projecting spur battery. Fort Frederica is located only twelve miles from Brunswick, GA and easily accessible to tourists by major interstates and causeways.
Qualifications
All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement-11/17/2023-unless otherwise stated in this vacancy announcement.
Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. For current Federal employees, if hours worked per week are not included on your resume, you must submit a non-award SF-50 for each federal position listed as part of your application to be used to validate your work schedule and determine the amount of qualifying experience that you will be granted. An award SF-50 will not be acceptable documentation for which to consider your amount of qualifying experience. For all other applicants who are not current federal employees, your resume must state either "full-time" (or "40 hours a week") or "part-time" with the number of hours worked per week to ensure proper crediting of specialized experience. Failure to adequately provide information needed to determine number of hours worked in each position may result in that time not being credited when evaluating qualifying experience.
For periods of time that reflect military service, the DD-214 or Statement of Service is sufficient to meet the full and/or part-time hours requirement as the service dates will be reflected.
To qualify for this position at the GS-14 grade level, you must possess the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement:
