Duties

You will perform emergency protocols and procedures by providing basic life support (BLS) established by the system medical director. You will drive and operate firefighting vehicles, such as, but not limited to: pumpers, aerial ladder trucks, and Airport Rescue Fire Fighting (ARFF) Vehicles. You will perform firefighting duties for a variety of facilities and perform pre-fire planning by physically going through structures to become familiar with the layout, fire hazards, and location of fixed fire protection systems. You will inspect, test, and maintain vehicles and equipment according to manufacturer's recommendations. You will operate equipment in a safe and efficient manner, while maintaining effective awareness of conditions for possible repositioning of vehicles and/or warning other firefighters of hazards.

  • You will be required to obtain and maintain current Firefighter certifications, clarified in Qualifications below.
  • Successful completion of a pre-employment drug test (including marijuana) is required. A tentative offer of employment will be rescinded if you fail to report to the drug test appointment or fail the test. You will be subject to random testing.
  • You will be required to wear personal protective equipment such as helmets, gloves, coveralls, glasses, goggles, respirators and safety shoes continuously for the duration of the work shift.
  • This is a Mission Essential position. You will be required to ensure organization or facility continuity of operations and/or completion of tasks that are considered essential to the mission designated by a local or command decision.

Qualifications

GS-07: Your resume must also demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-06 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: 1) Performing structural firefighting duties for a variety of facilities, which may include large multi-storied buildings, industrial areas, and/or base storage facilities; 2) Operating firefighting equipment (e.g., hoses, ladders, hydrants) to fight structural fires; 3) Maintaining firefighting equipment and fire station facilities; 4) Using hazard and risk assessment techniques to complete an initial hazardous materials incident analysis; 5) Driving a firefighting vehicle (e.g., pumper, aerial ladder truck, rescue truck, brush truck, quick-attack vehicle, airport rescue fire fighting vehicle); and 6) Performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) or automatic external defibrillation (AED) during respiratory and cardiac emergencies. Required Certifications: Firefighter I and II, National Registry Emergency Medical Technician (NREMT) and CPR, Aircraft Rescue Firefighting (ARFF), HAZMAT - Technician, Apparatus Driver/Operator - Pumper and Aerial. Marine firefighting and Aircraft Rescue Firefighting (ARFF) will be required within one year of being hired. Must obtain all certification requirements of the GS-7 within one year of being hired. GS-06: Your resume must also demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-05 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: 1) Performing structural firefighting duties for a variety of facilities, which may include large multi-storied buildings, industrial areas, and/or base storage facilities; 2) Operating firefighting equipment (e.g., hoses, ladders, hydrants) to fight structural fires; 3) Maintaining firefighting equipment and fire station facilities; 4) Using hazard and risk assessment techniques to complete an initial hazardous materials incident analysis; 5) Driving a firefighting vehicle (e.g., pumper, aerial ladder truck, rescue truck, brush truck, quick-attack vehicle, airport rescue fire fighting vehicle); and 6) Performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) or automatic external defibrillation (AED) during respiratory and cardiac emergencies. Required Certifications: Firefighter I and II, CPR, HAZMAT - Awareness and Operations, and Apparatus Driver/Operator - Pumper and Aerial. Marine firefighting and Aircraft Rescue Firefighting (ARFF) will be required within one year of being hired. GS-05: Your resume must also demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-04 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: 1) Demonstrating knowledge of first aid procedures and CPR, 2) Demonstrating knowledge of design, construction, physical configuration, and contents of a variety of structures and facilities; and 3) Operating fire equipment, preventative/control equipment, and utilizing knowledge of various types of fire hazards. Required Certifications: Firefighter I and II, CPR, and HAZMAT - Operations. All certifications for the GS-06 will be required within one year of being hired.
