Duties

The Coast Guard provides medical care for over 42,000 active duty and reserve personnel. The incumbent serves as a Family Practice Physician responsible for providing health care to active duty and reserve personnel to ensure they are operationally ready to perform their missions.Being a Coast Guard civilian makes you a valuable member of the Coast Guard team.

Qualifications

To be considered eligible for this position, you must meet the basic and additional requirements below:To meet the basic requirements, you must meet the following requirements:Degree: Doctor of Medicine, Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine or equivalent from a school in the United States or Canada. This degree must have been accredited by the Council on Medical Education of the American Medical Association; Association of American Medical Colleges Liaison Committee on Medical Education; Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation of the American Osteopathic Association, or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained.Degree from Foreign Medical School: A Doctor of Medicine or equivalent degree from a foreign medical school must provide education and medical knowledge equivalent to accredited schools in the United States. Evidence of equivalency to accredited schools in the United States is demonstrated by permanent certification by the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG). ECFMG through a program of certification, to determine if international medical graduates (IMGs) are ready to enter residency or fellowship programs in the U.S. that are accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). ACGME requires IMGs who enter ACGME-accredited programs to be certified by ECFMG. ECFMG Certification is also one of the eligibility requirements for IMGs to take Step 3 of the three-step United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE). Medical licensing authorities in the United States require that IMGs be certified by ECFMG, among other requirements, to obtain an unrestricted license to practice medicine. The requirements have included examinations in the medical sciences, evaluation of English language proficiency, and documentation of medical education credentials.Licensure: For all grade levels and positions, applicants must possess a current, active, full, and unrestricted license or registration as a Physician from a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States.Graduate Medical Education: Subsequent to obtaining a Doctor of Medicine or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree, a candidate must have completed, at minimum, a residency training program in Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, or Occupational Medicine at an institution accredited for residency training by a recognized body of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). Board certification in one or more of the three specialties listed above is preferred but not required.In addition to the Basic Requirements above, you must meet the following additional requirement to be considered for the GP-14: Applicant must have four (4) years of graduate training in Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, or Occupational Medicine or equivalent experience and training in Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, or Occupational Medicine. Qualified candidates will undergo a credentialing process prior to employment with the USCG. This process includes validation of medical examinations, education, internship and residency.
