Duties

You will serve as a PHYSICAL SCIENCE TECHNICIAN in the RADIOLOGICAL MONITORING DIVISION (CODE 105.3), RADIOLOGICAL CONTROL OFFICE, PORTSMOUTH NAVAL SHIPYARD, KITTERY, ME You will perform duties such as operation of radiological control points, inspection of containments and wrapping material, inspection of work areas, and surveillance of radiological work. You will perform and interpret air, water, and surface radiation surveys in vessel and shipyard areas, posting areas and arranging for erection of barriers. You will inspect deviations from normal or anticipated radiation levels to determine deviations are transient, defective instruments, moved shielding, or equipment/areas has higher than expected radiation levels. You will implement radiological control procedures related to the storage, local transportation, and local treatment of small volumes of nuclear waste. You will control personnel exposure to ionizing radiation, protection against radioactive contamination, and protection of general public against exposure to ionizing radiation. You will conduct continuing surveillance of work involving radioative materials and radiological control associated with Naval nuclear propulsion plant work.

Qualifications

GS-04: Successful completion of 2 years of study that included at least 12 semester hours in any combination of courses such as physical science, engineering, or any branch of mathematics, except financial and commercial mathematics OR Your resume must also demonstrate at least one year of SPECIALIZED experience at or equivalent to the GS-03 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: Under close supervision and with extensive review Experience assisting with applying standardized rules, procedures, methods, techniques, and operations that apply to radiological principles or health physics. Experience assisting with gathering, recording, and assembling pertinent data and report observations and findings to appropriate personnel. Experience assuring the proper control of radioactive material associated with Naval Nuclear propulsion plants. GS-05: Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree (a) with major study in an appropriate field of physical science, or (b) that included at least 24 semester hours in any combination of courses such as physical science, engineering, or any branch of mathematics, except financial and commercial mathematics OR Your resume must also demonstrate at least one year of SPECIALIZED experience at or equivalent to the GS-03 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: Experience assisting with applying standardized rules, procedures, methods, techniques, and operations that apply to radiological principles or health physics. Experience assisting with gathering, recording, and assembling pertinent data and report observations and findings to appropriate personnel. Experience monitoring the storage and treatment of contaminated clothing, equipment, and waste. Education

SUBSTITUTION OF EDUCATION FOR EXPERIENCE: Applicants may substitute the following education for the required experience, provided it demonstrates the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to do the work of the position:

GS-04: Successful completion of 2 years of study that included at least 12 semester hours in any combination of courses such as physical science, engineering, or any branch of mathematics, except financial and commercial mathematics.

GS-05: Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree (a) with major study in an appropriate field of physical science, or (b) that included at least 24 semester hours in any combination of courses such as physical science, engineering, or any branch of mathematics, except financial and commercial mathematics.

COMBINATION OF EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be combined to meet the total qualification requirements.
