About the Position: Serves as manager of the Safety and Occupational Health program for Yakima Training Center, responsible for overall planning and development of a comprehensive safety and accident prevention program. Plans, establishes and interprets programs, policies and criteria covering high risk tactical and industrial operations; residential and nonresidential construction; comprehensive 24-hour safety program for military personnel, family members and civilian employees.

Duties

Investigate and analyze accidents involving personnel and material damage to determine circumstances, nature and extent of injury or damage. Conduct safety campaigns to maintain interest in accident prevention. Compile and analyzes accident statistics to develop reports, charts and tables. Conduct surveys and inspections of operations and facilities to ensure safe practices. Implement higher echelon directives in local safety and occupational health areas. Study safety problems to develop countermeasures to eliminate or minimize them.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • This position requires a pre-employment physical and an annual physical once appointed to the position.
  • Incumbent must possess and maintain a valid drivers license.
  • This position has a requirement to lift up to 50 lbs. in the regular performance of duties.
  • This position may require travel up to 25% of the time.
  • This position may be subject to on call rotations.

Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes demonstrated experience 1;)Performing accident investigation, reporting and analysis to determine frequency and severity rates, and trends, 2;) Advising supervisors and safety representatives of appropriate safety and occupational health measures to control or eliminate hazardous operating processes or environmental conditions, and 3;) Preparing and/or revising safety instructions and guides for distribution to personnel. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the second lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-09). OR Education: Ph.D or equivalent doctoral degree or 3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree with a major study in safety or occupational health fields (safety, occupational health, industrial hygiene), or Ph.D or equivalent doctoral degree in other related fields that included or was supplemented by at least 24 semester hours of study from among the following (or closely related) disciplines: safety, occupational health, industrial hygiene, occupational medicine, toxicology, public health, mathematics, physics, chemistry, biological sciences, engineering, and industrial psychology. OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the second year (total graduate semester hours minus 36) by 18. Add the two percentages. You will be evaluated on the basis of your level of competency in the following areas: Mishap/Accident InvestigationRisk ManagementSafety and HealthWritten Communication Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-09).
