About the Position: This position operates several types of self-propelled railroad maintenance vehicles and performs a wide range of railway maintenance, repair, and inspections.
This is a Bargaining Unit AR3135 position.
Duties
Operate self-propelled railroad maintenance vehicles performing railway maintenance and repair.
Operate a very highly technical computerized tamper track vehicle.
Identify problems in track surface and geometry.
Write inspection reports to document inspection results.
Follow safety rules and regulations governing proper use and storage of equipment.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- This position meets the criteria for compliance with Federal and Department of the Army Drug Free Workplace Programs. Detection of the presence of drugs is warranted. This position is subject to a pre-employment screening and random testing.
- This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
- This position requires business travel 30% of the time including OCONUS locations.
- This position requires you to complete the Railroad Safety Course within 30 days of being appointed to this position and attend annual Railroad Safety refresher course.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of an Railroad Maintenance Vehicle Operator without more than normal supervision. Must possess the ability to perform common tasks including operating computerized tamper track vehicle; calculating track curvature and elevation, alignment, and ballast quantities for any given project; programming the tamper computer by inputting data from said calculations; inspecting tracks for defects; and performing repairs, maintenance, and track inspection projects, such as aligning and elevating track on curved grade with super elevated rail where proper alignment and elevation are difficult to establish and maintain and repair are where derailment or accident have caused extensive damage.

Physical Effort: You must be capable of moderate to heavy physical exertion in operating machines and tools used on track maintenance and in loading and unloading ties, and switch parts. You will typically lift and move heavy items weighing 80 pounds and more. All lifts over 50 pounds will be assisted with a two person lift or using a mechanical handling equipment lifting device. The two person lift limit is 100 pounds and will only be used for single event, non-routine lifts.

Working Conditions: This position requires work to be performed outside with exposure to snow, ice, heat, dust, and dirt. You are exposed to danger or bruises and more severe injury from operating hand tools and handling heavy materials. There is danger of falls from motor cars and danger from work operations of others such as the crane operator. There is danger of collision with trains and vehicles.
