This is a temporary appointment. Appointment to this position will not convey permanent status and will be for a period not-to-exceed 1039 hours in a service year.
Duties
Prepares conventional maps, graphs, and illustrations using traditional cartographic methods or automated systems. Digitizes to convert data into GIS databases, produces plotted maps using systems and software such as ARC/INFO and ARCVIEW.
Collects, appraises, and selects source materials and other data for map construction. Source material and data come from a wide variety of places. You will translate field data into both maps and documents to create presentation maps.
Cartographic Technicians orient and outline map features and details from photographic materials, requiring selected and identification of control points, computing angles, preparing template lay downs, assembling prints for mosaics.
Final products include road and rights-of-way venter line information. Cartographic Technicians use standard procedures to extract information from field notes to prepare various graphic materials to be converted to graphic presentation.

GS-06: one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS- 5 level. Examples of specialized experience may include drafting selected cadastral and mineral survey plats from field notes; researching surface and mineral status of land; and researching surface and mineral status of land holdings by numerous federal and state agencies; OR successful completion of one year (27 quarter or 18 semester hours) of graduate study which included coursework directly related to the work of the position; OR a combination of experience and education to meet the total experience.
GS-07: one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS- 6 level. Examples of specialized experience may include performing cartographic, drafting and limited illustration work; and extracting information from field notes to prepare various graphic materials, numerical data recorded in field notes and convert to graphic presentations; OR successful completion of one year (27 quarter or 18 semester hours) of graduate study which included coursework directly related to the work of the position; OR a combination of experience and education to meet the total experience.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Physical Demands/Work Environments: Work is mostly sedentary, some lifting, bending, carrying are required to move and service equipment, handling source materials and supplies, and arranging office space. Work requires a marked degree of hand-eye coordination, dexterity, and concentration and involves regular and recurring periods of prolonged sitting at drafting light tables, digitizing tablets and computer workstations. Normal safety precautions against everyday risks or discomforts. Position may occasionally require some field where there may be exposure to rain, heat, or cold. Prescribed safety precautions should be taken.
Education

Graduate education or an internship meets the specialized experience required above GS-5
only in those instances where it is directly related to the work of the position. One full year of graduate education meets the requirements for GS-6 and 7.
