This position is located in the Mental Health Service at the VA Medical Center in Richmond, VA. The role of the Research Health Science Specialist - Research Coordinator is to support, facilitate and carry out research projects for the Traumatic Brain Injury Model Systems (TBIMS) study at the Richmond Polytrauma Rehabilitation Center (PRC).
Duties

Major duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Manages and oversees day-to-day activities of research studies, including all actions related to collaboration with or supervising study personnel, enrolling and consenting research participants, the proper collection of data and maintaining records of all participants;
Establishes protocols for data collection, organization and tracking, organizes data sets, performs basic analysis of data and generates a variety of reports;
Reviews documentation completed by study personnel for accuracy and completeness;
Maintains the Investigator Study File, which consists of all records and materials pertaining to the research study, including participant files and related correspondence and regulatory documents;
Ensures timely and complete submission of IRB documents;
Prepares reports and requested progress reports;
Develops and gives presentations on research studies performance and results;
Utilizes effective practices for attracting and retaining study personnel including research assistants;
Works with HR as appropriate to participate in selections, performance management and address employee relations issues;
Oversees and supervises the activities of other study personnel, including research assistants;
Ensures personnel follow all applicable protocols and regulations, including requirements for the protection of human subjects and research safety and security;
Serves as study point of contact for all activities related to enrollment, including special events and participant visits;
Develops plans for expanding recruitment efforts with IRB guidelines and protocols, including working with local site communication office in Veteran outreach programs;
Performs other related duties as assigned.
Work Schedule: Monday through Friday, 8:00am to 4:30pm

Qualifications
All applicants must meet the following Basic Education Requirement:
Basic Education Requirement: Possess a Bachelor's degree (or higher) from an accredited college or university in a major study in an academic field related to the medical field, health sciences or allied sciences appropriate to the work of this position. In addition to the basic education requirement, to qualify for the GS-9 level, you must meet one of the following requirements:
Specialized Experience: You must have at least one (1) full year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level (GS-7) in the Federal service that has given you the particular knowledge, skills and abilities required to successfully perform the duties of a Research Health Science Specialist - Research Coordinator and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. Specialized experience includes experience coordinating and managing the day-to-day clinical research projects and programs; recruiting, screening, enrolling and following-up on human research subjects; managing and coordinating research administrative activities; conducting analyses of work processes to evaluate programmatic efficiencies or inefficiencies; understanding human research practices to communicate effectively with staff and management; gathering study data to prepare and present briefings; ; and utilizing computer-based programs to maintain databases, produce reports, research information, etc. NOTE: Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must clearly indicate the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment. ~OR~
Education: Successful completion of two (2) years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a master's degree or equivalent graduate degree related to the position that provided the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of this position. Combination: Equivalent combinations of successfully completed graduate-level education (beyond the first year) and specialized experience, as described above, which meet the total experience requirements for this grade level. IMPORTANT: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. All experience listed on your resume must include the month and year start/end dates. Physical Requirements:The work is generally sedentary. Typically, the person in this position may sit comfortably to do the work. However, there may be some walking, standing, bending and carrying of light items, such as audio-visual equipment, photocopy paper and books.
