The Boiler Plant Operator at the Loch Raven Campus and monitored day to day operations of several boilers in multiple locations throughout a mulit-building locations. Recruitment and Relocation Incentive are authorized.

Duties

Some duties may include: Incumbent will operate and performs operator maintenance and repair on boilers and auxiliary equipment. Incumbent must visually inspect each individual boiler on campus every 4 hours, document results and report back to supervisor of any known deficiencies. The incumbent must understand testing sequence and analyzing feed water and boiler water using standard chemical tests without oversight. Incumbent must operate all boiler auxiliary equipment such as automatic boiler controls, feed water heaters, pumps, forced and induced draft fans and water softener equipment and materials. Incumbent must take boiler water samples and runs tests to determine specifics such as acidity, causticity and alkalinity using reagents, color slides and other standards. Incumbent must determine the type and amount of chemicals to be added to the boilers return system for control of corrosion and scale formation. Incumbent must operate and maintain feedwater regulators and pumps, combustion control equipment, de-aerating equipment, de-alkalizers and special safety equipment. Incumbent must Performs preventative and scheduled maintenance on equipment including boiler feed water pumps, fuel oil pumps, air compressors, generators, and other boiler systems. Incumbent must use hand or power tools when performing tasks like replacing defective valves, filters, or gauges on a heating system. Incumbent may test and replace wires, switches, and other basic low voltage electrical components as well as replace and install valves, piping, chemical pumps, and sampling equipment, etc. Incumbent must be able to determine when to bring another boiler online or to remove a boiler from operation, in the least amount of time, to meet changing load demands while maintaining safe levels and efficient combustion. Incumbent must be able to assess emergencies and provide initial responses to local Fire Department and follow up responses to the Maryland Department of the Environment, GEMS (Green Environmental Management System) and VHA safety office to notify of the situation. Incumbent works on equipment which affects air pollution, such as the following for each building where applies. Fuel mixture and combustion must be monitored. Stack temperature and exhaust composition are also to be monitored daily. Work Schedule: Tour to be determine / 07:00 am - 3:30 pm Position Description Title/PD#: Boiler Plant Operator/PD22327A Position Location: Loch Raven Physical Requirements: Will be required to frequently work in confined areas and around boilers and support equipment. The work requires moderate to strenuous effort and long periods of walking, standing, climbing, bending and, crouching. Workers frequently lift and carry boiler parts and chemical supplies weighing up to 40 pounds unassisted and occasionally items weighing over 40 pounds with the assistance of other workers or weight handling equipment. Promotion Potential: The selectee may be promoted to the full performance level without further competition when all regulatory, qualification, and performance requirements are met. Selection at a lower grade level does not guarantee promotion to the full performance level.
