This position is a Engineering Equipment Operator, WG-5716-9, working in Columbia, North Carolina, for the Pocosin Lakes National Wildlife Refuge. Duties

As an Engineering Equipment Operator, your duties will include, but are not limited to, the following: Operate a variety of tracked and wheeled heavy equipment, such as excavators, skid steers, dozers, dump trucks/trailers, motor-grader, agricultural and articulating tractors with implements, herbicide spraying equipment. Operate farm tractors with auxiliary equipment for farming, mowing, herbicide spraying, maintaining dikes and fire breaks, and other related activities. Safely excavate, build, grade, load, level and finish to exact specifications using an excavator, bulldozer, loader, backhoe, road grader, forklift, scraper or trencher close to above and below ground facilities and equipment such as structures, utility lines, culverts, irrigation equipment, fences and pavement based on engineering drawings as appropriate. Perform daily preventative maintenance and make repairs and adjustments to equipment and attachments. This includes, but is not limited to, replacing chains and belts, cables, lubrication, oil and filter changes, battery checks, and safety inspections.

  • Driver’s License: Selectees required to possess and maintain a valid State driver's license at all times during their tenure.
  • Duties of this position require the employee to obtain and maintain a valid Class A State Commercial Driver's License (CDL) to operate various vehicles and equipment.
  • Uniform: Official U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service uniform may be required.
  • Unusual tour of duty: The employee may be required to work other than normal duty hours, which may include evenings, weekends, and holidays.
  • Probationary Period: Selectees may be required to successfully complete a probationary period.

Qualifications

To be qualified candidates must meet any screen out element(s) listed at an "acceptable" level, and must achieve an average rating of at least "acceptable" on all of the elements. Only education, training, or experience acquired before the closing date will be considered. SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire.
