The New Jersey VA Healthcare system- East Orange Location is currently recruiting for one Supervisory Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist for the Imaging Department. This incumbent will serve as the Chief Technologist, (Supervisor), with overall responsibility for the coordination, planning and direction of the general diagnostic, MRI, CT, US, Sp/Interventional suite, Operating Room, Bone Dexa daily operations for these radiology/imaging modalities.
Duties
This incumbent will have responsibilities that includes oversight for all in patient procedures; outpatient clinics, and ICU areas throughout the Medical Center and off site locations where radiology equipment is present. Incumbent supports the mission/vision statement for the service, performs responsibilities independently with guidance as needed by the Administrative Officer/Supervisor for the Imaging Service. The tour assignment is based on the needs of the service and may include weekend and holiday coverage. The incumbent is expected to perform emergent radiology procedures during the absence of appropriate staffing levels so that direct patient care services are not affected and continuity of service is maintained. The incumbent is expected to drive to the outlying campus, the CBOC's on a regular basis in order to assess the continuity of service provided. The incumbent will drive to other Medical Centers within VISN 2 or outside VISN 2 as directed by the Chief of Service as required. The incumbent is expected to be available during the off tour hours addressing the immediate needs of the service relative to staffing issues, equipment malfunctions, etc. capable of resolving those issues via the telephone or by reporting to the Medical Center if needed. Decisions made by the incumbent are based on the urgency of need, their cost to the organization, the training needs of subordinates, and the complexity of short term, goals and the impact such decisions have on long term commitments.
Some duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Directs the technical services, provides counsel/instruction to employees on clinical and administrative matters, and programs that support this tertiary care facility, the Lyons off site campus, CBOC's in the surrounding communities, and VISN 3 imaging initiatives. The services provided are direct and affect other multidisciplinary services ability to provide critical patient support/care. The incumbent's ability to identify and implement methods for improving the efficiency and effectiveness of performing these services and the liaison role the incumbent plays affect the overall operational services to the patients, families, and community. The incumbent is responsible for the Quality Control/Quality Assurance program through a subordinate staff member under his/her supervision. The incumbent provides direct oversight daily for 21 Multi-Modality trained DRT's; 3 Medical Machine Technologists and serves as the clinical instructor for the affiliate allied health radiology program by providing guidance to the students that rotate through the service. The incumbent also supervises two Lead DRT Technologists position. The incumbent works closely with the PACS Administrator, when issues surface relative to dicom compatibility equipment issues; procedure outliers that appear on the incomplete listing, etc. Incumbent is able to trouble shoot "exceptions" or issues that may develop prior to images sent through to the PACS environment. Coordinates the competency reviews for staff working permanent off tours and weekends during the course of the rating cycle. Works closely with the Radiation Safety Officer, reporting/resolving issues as they arise, providing a safe environment for staff and patients. Is responsible for staff practicing radiation safety in order to reduce exposure to patients, staff and self. This is achieved by the use of lead aprons, lead gloves, lead shields, lead lined walls and collimation. Film badges are worn by the technicians in compliance with radiation regulations. The incumbent must be aware of and practice the safety policies/procedures of the Medical Center, and participate in quality assurance activities as directed. Is able to identify when procedures; SOP's require modifications in order to achieve the best outcome and implement new procedures as needed. Inventory Control: Ensures that adequate quantities of supplies are available to meet workload demands through a systemized process of ordering, receipt and inventory control. Assures that all imaging modality areas, ultrasound procedure rooms are stocked with necessary supplies at all times with special attention to emergent equipment and supplies. Assists in determining par levels for specific supplies. Coordinates new product evaluation. Recommends methods and products to reduce costs and/or increase quality. Recommends staffing requirements based on past, present, and future workload patterns.
Work Schedule: Monday-Friday 8a -4:30pm or as dictated by patient care demands. Supervisor determines the tour.

Qualifications
Basic Requirements:
Citizenship: US Citizen
Certification: All applicants must be certified in general radiologic technology by the American Registry of Radiologic Technology, Radiography (ARRT) (R). Advanced ARRT certification is required for assignments that include computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), [or Mammography (M) duties performed independently, as applicable]. Advanced certification indicates that the incumbent [can operate independently] and has demonstrated specific clinical competency in the appropriate specialty and taken and passed the designated examination. [In modalities that require advanced certification, to support their continued development, technologists who do not possess an advanced certification may be provided on the job training with oversight from a certified radiologic technologist.] . NOTE: Advanced ARRT-CT is what is required for this position. Proof of this must be provided at the time of application, failure to do so will result in disqualification.
Education: Completion of a full-time training course of at least 24 months duration (or the equivalent) in a post-high school diagnostic radiologic technology program, evidenced by a certificate or an associate's degree, accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT) or from schools accredited by the ARRT and certification by the ARRT in radiology.
English Language Proficiency: DRTs must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), and 7407(d).
Grade Determinations:
Experience. At least one year of the following types of experience comparable to the next lower grade level that fully meets the KSAs at that level.
Experience comparable to the next lower grade level includes experience such as directing on the job training, evaluating employees work performance and recommendation of performance ratings, technical planning and oversight to set and adjust work priorities, knowledge of medical center, VHA and government wide human resources management regulations, policies and procedures.
Assignments. For all assignments above the full performance level, the higher-level duties must consist of significant scope, complexity (difficulty), and range of variety, and be performed by the incumbent at least 25% of the time. DRTs at this grade level may be appointed to one of the following assignments:
Supervisory Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist-Assignment to this grade level is restricted to those serving as the chief radiologic technologist at medical facilities with comprehensive and complex radiographic and imaging programs. Employees in these assignments plan and direct the radiologic technology program at active, affiliated medical centers with critical care and emergent inpatient services, and have full supervisory responsibility for a large staff of subordinate personnel, including GS-10 DRTs, at least one subordinate team leader or supervisor at the next lower grade level, and may include clerical or administrative support staff. At this level, the radiologic technology program typically includes the full variety of comprehensive and complex modalities.
The candidate must demonstrate the following technical KSAs:
i. Ability to perform the full range of supervisory duties, including responsibility for assignment of work performed; performance evaluations; recommendations for appointments, awards, advancements, and, when appropriate, disciplinary actions; and identification of continuing education and training needs.
ii. Ability to serve as a consultant to other facility personnel in evaluating and planning radiologic technology services for the most complex cases.
iii. Ability to participate in research studies and/or as a consultant to others conducting research.
iv. Ability to consult with staff and resident physicians through patient presentation, attending ward rounds, and specialty clinics and/or conferences, etc.
v. Ability to assess, plan, and evaluate the delivery of radiologic technology services at the facility.
