This position is located in Salem Maritime & Saugus Iron Works National Historic Sites, in the Maintenance Division. This is a Career/Career-Conditional Full-time appointment.
Travel, transportation, and relocation expenses may be paid if the selectee lives outside of the local commuting area and is otherwise eligible for reimbursement of relocation expenses in accordance with the Federal Travel Regulation.
Duties
Provides experienced and professional services in carpentry, masonry, painting, electrical, HVAC, heavy equipment operation and plumbing.
Serve as a journeyman in carpentry on modern, historic, and post-and-beam buildings and one the following trades: electrical, plumbing, or HVAC.
Use computer systems to ensure that compliance is researched, completed and tracked for all tasks and projects.
Develops and reviews project descriptions, justifications, scopes of work, specifications, and estimates for various construction and maintenance projects to include service contracts.
Determine necessary personnel, tools, materials, and equipment required to accomplish assignments.
Review and inspect work, implementing corrective actions as needed to maintain safety and health standards.
Determines necessary personnel, tools, materials and equipment required to accomplish assignments. Assures materials and equipment necessary to perform tasks are available prior to inititating work assignments.
Area Information
While the incumbent will be stationed at Saugus Iron Works National Historic Site, the position serves both Salem Maritime National Historic Site and Saugus Iron Works National Historic Site. The incumbent will need to work at both locations as needed, as these two sites are managed by one team.
Located in Saugus, MA at 244 Central St., Saugus Iron Works National Historic Site is the site of the first integrated ironworks in North America (1646-1648). The site includes a reconstructed blast furnace, forge and rolling and slitting mill, a restored 17th century house and museum. The site includes historic, historic replica and modern buildings, and the replica ironworks includes functioning water wheels and associated machinery.
Salem Maritime National Historic Site is located in Salem, Massachusetts, with offices at 160 Derby St., in the harbor waterfront area. The site preserves and interprets the maritime history of Salem. The Park includes historic structures such as the brick Custom House where Nathaniel Hawthorne worked, the West India Goods Store, the 18th century Derby House and Hawkes House, the 17th century Narbonne House, three historic wharves and the sailing vessel Friendship of Salem.

To qualify for this position, you must have sufficient knowledge and ability in the following job-related factors:

Screen-out Element: "Ability to Lead or Supervise" For this position, work is defined as: 1) Short and long-range planning, coordinating, and scheduling of work, including developing projects utilizing Cost Estimating Software System (CESS) and/or similar systems; 2) Selecting and assigning work to subordinates, making judgment calls on routine activities, emergency work, scheduling, work methods, and procedures; 3) Overseeing the work of multiple building trades involved with the maintenance, repair, restoration, rehabilitation, and stabilization of historical and non-historical structures as well as the rehabilitation of public use facilities; 4) Assigning and overseeing electrical, plumbing, HVAC, carpentry, masonry and painting work.
