The primary purpose of this position is to provide a student trainee in the Pathways Internship Program with on the job training and guidance, using varied functions of multiple office automation software to produce a wide range of documents and to perform miscellaneous clerical support.
Duties
Uses varied functions of multiple office automation software to produce a wide range of documents, formats, etc. Specific assignments require a varying number and sequence of steps and use of different functions from one assignment to another.
Prepares a wide variety of recurring correspondence, internal reports, and other documents from information obtained from the staff, files, and other sources and reviews and finalizes documents prepared by others. Composes routine, nontechnical correspondence, such as requests for information.
Reviews and processes incoming and outgoing correspondence, materials, publications, regulations, and directives. Screens incoming mail to identify what needs to be brought to the attention of the supervisor, referred to the appropriate staff, or rerouted to other organizations/offices.
Receives and directs telephone calls or visitors. Ascertains the nature of the call or visit and provides complete and clear information that addresses most routine or procedural issues.
Establishes, updates, and maintains office records of various types that may be needed or will assist in the efficient operation of the office. Maintains, purges, and disposes of office records/files in accordance with established regulations and procedures.
Requirements
- Must meet suitability requirements for Federal employment
- Must be at least 16 years of age
- Must be enrolled at least half-time at a qualifying accredited institution
- Must sign a Participant Agreement
- U.S. citizen or national (resident of American Samoa or Swains Island)
- Must be eligible to work under U.S. immigration laws
- Must be registered for Selective Service, see Legal and Regulatory Guidance
- You must be a student currently enrolled in an accredited college or university
- Accepted for enrollment or enrolled in an approved program
- Pursuing a Baccalaureate Degree (Junior/Senior only), Graduate or Professional Degree
- Enrollment must be at least half-time course load as defined by the education institution (typically six hours or equivalent for undergraduate and three hours or equivalent for graduate)
- Have a good academic standing (no less than 2.95 cumulative GPA on a 4.0 grading scale)
- Meet the qualification standards of the position
- Non-citizens may be eligible for employment if Permitted by the DoD Appropriation Act
- May be required to travel by military and/or civilian aircraft in the performance of official duties
- This position is established under the provisions of the Pathways Program
- The incumbent must have the ability to type a minimum of 40 WPM
- Must be able to obtain and maintain a SECRET security clearance
- This is a TERM position NTE 01 Dec 2023
- Eligible for situational telework only. This eligibility is separate and distinct from the employee’s eligibility as the telework arrangement may be terminated at the discretion of the supervisor or at the employee’s request.
Qualifications
PLEASE NOTE: This is not a developmental opportunity, this position may be filled at the GS-04 or GS-05 grade level depending on applicant qualifications and organizational requirements. The individual selected for this position may be considered for promotion to a higher grade without further competition upon meeting all legal and regulatory/program requirements.
PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.
VOLUNTEER WORK EXPERIENCE: Refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (i.e., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student and social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge and skills that can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

To qualify for a GS-04: Completion of 2 academic years of post high school study or an associate's degree in a related field of study
To qualify for a GS-05: Completion of 4 academic years of post-high school study leading to a bachelor's degree or completion of 4 academic years of pre-professional study.
FOREIGN EDUCATION: Education completed in foreign colleges or universities may be used to meet the requirements. You must show proof the education credentials have been deemed to be at least equivalent to that gained in conventional U.S. education program. It is your responsibility to provide such evidence when applying.
