This position is located in the Historic Architecture and Strategic Planning Division of the Historic Architecture, Conservation and Engineering Center in Lowell, MA. This is a term position with an initial appointment expecting to last at least 13 months but may be extended up to a total of four years without further competition. Duties

As a Historian (Historic Preservation) GS-0170-12 with the National Park Service (NPS), your duties will include, but are not limited to: Conducts comprehensive primary and secondary research on a wide variety of subjects and themes dictated by the diversity of historic structures and monuments within park and regional boundaries. Performs research regarding various 16th to 20th century historic structures such as residences, monuments, lighthouses, battlefield fortifications, churches, and bridges. Performs physical investigations of historic buildings, monuments, structures, and their components. Documents historic structures incorporating photography, measured or schematic drawings, and video. Prepares historic structure reports and other technical studies based on the correlation and interpretation of the data resulting from the documentary, laboratory, and physical investigations. Develops scopes of work / scopes of services for historic structure reports and other research and preservation projects, including the creation of project plans and budgets and independent government estimates. You will perform the duties listed above for the following projects: MIMA (Minute Man National Historic Park), Rehabilitate and Repair Structures and Landscapes. ADAM (Adams Memorial), Exterior Repairs to Woodshed, Carriage House and Library. FRLA (Fredrick Law Olmsted), Repair, paint historic shutters, of Olmsted House. SAMA (Salem Maritime), Hawkes House repair widows walk leak and associated damage. EDIS (Thomas Edison National Historic Park), Repair and Preserve Black Moria Exterior. SAIR (Saugus Iron Works), Complete immediate exterior repairs for Ironworks House, Forge, Slitting Mill. BLRV (Blackstone River Valley), Complete immediate exterior and interior repairs to Wilkinson Mill.

Qualifications

All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement-11/10/2023-unless otherwise stated in this vacancy announcement. In order to qualify for this position, you must possess a degree in History. OR A degree in related field that included at least 18 semester hours in History. OR Combination of education and experience which includes courses equivalent to a major in History, or a major in a related field that included at least 18 semester hours in History. In addition, you must possess one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-11 level (obtained in either the public or private sectors) researching, identifying, documenting, evaluating, analyzing, and project development for the treatment, preservation, stabilization, renovation, and restoration of historic structures such as: residences, monuments, lighthouses, battlefield fortification, churches and bridges. This includes performing research on a wide variety of historic structures, monuments, and various 16th to 20th century historic structures; Performing physical investigations of historic structures; Documenting historic structures incorporating photography, measured or schematic drawings and video; Recording investigative and analytical findings; Preparing historic structure reports and conducting studies based on data from laboratory and physical investigations.
