The Blood Epidemiology and Clinical Therapeutics Branch (BECTB), Division of Blood Diseases and Resources (DBDR) National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) seeks an experienced and proven leader to serve as its Branch Chief. Applicants should be experienced in any aspect of blood disorders (e.g., bleeding, clotting, anemia, marrow failure, hemoglobinopathies).

Duties

BECTB, DBDR, NHLBI seeks an experienced and proven leader who will serve as a Supervisory Physician and Branch Chief supervising medical officers, program staff, and the clinical trial specialists in this branch. The Branch Chief provides leadership needed to oversee the clinical trials and associated Data Safety Monitoring Boards (DSMB) activities. This includes phase 1 high risk trials that are managed by staff and executive secretaries, cooperative agreements for our phased clinical trial awards, and contracts, all of which require leadership oversight. This position includes critical service as the NIH-NHLBI representative on the Department of Health and Human Services/Office of the Assistant Secretary for Health (HHS/OASH) Blood Organ and Tissue Senior Executive Council (BOTSEC) and also serves as the NHLBI representative on the Federal Drug Administration (FDA)-led Transfusion-Transmissible Infection Monitoring Study (TTIMS). Additional duties may include: Administer clinical and basic research projects. Plan, organize, and direct research programs involving direct patient care using applied and/or basic research. Review, analyze, and investigate clinical trails, protocols, and the treatment of patients. Analyze, evaluate, and interpret scientific and clinical data to prepare papers for publication and presentation. Conceptualize new research direction and projects. Keep abreast of scientific and clinical developments through review of literature and attending professional meetings, conferences, and symposia.

Qualifications

Education Requirement: Successful completion of the requirements for Doctor of Medicine or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine, or equivalent, from a school in the United States or Canada. This degree must have been accredited by the Council on Medical Education of the American Medical Association; Association of American Medical Colleges; Liaison Committee on Medical Education; Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation of the American Osteopathic Association; or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained. For further information, please visit OPM's qualification standard; OR Successful completion of a Doctor of Medicine or equivalent degree from a foreign medical school that provided education and medical knowledge substantially equivalent to accredited schools in the United States that was demonstrated by permanent certification by the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG); OR Possession of a Fifth Pathway certificate through the successful completion of premedical education in the United States AND graduate education from a foreign medical school that provided education and medical knowledge substantially equivalent to accredited schools in the United States; OR Successful completion of the U.S. Medical Licensing Examination. Licensure Requirement: You must have an active, current, full, and unrestricted license or registration as a physician from a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States. NOTE: You will be required to provide your licensure or registration information within the assessment questionnaire. Graduate Training Requirement: Subsequent to obtaining a Doctor of Medicine or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree, you must have at least 1 year of supervised experience providing direct service in a clinical setting, i.e., a 1-year internship or the first year of a residency program in a hospital or an institution accredited for such training. Graduate training programs include only those internship, residency, and fellowship programs that are approved by accrediting bodies recognized within the United States or Canada. Descriptions of such programs are described below: An internship program involves broadly based clinical practice in which physicians acquire experience in treating a variety of medical problems under supervision (e.g., internal medicine, surgery, general practice, obstetrics-gynecology, and pediatrics). Such programs are in hospitals or other institutions accredited for internship training by a recognized body of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME); OR A residency program involves training in a specialized field of medicine in a hospital or an institution accredited for training in the specialty by a recognized body of the American Medical Association, (AMA) or Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME); OR A fellowship program involves advanced training (beyond residency training) in a given medical specialty in either a clinical or research setting in a hospital or an institution accredited in the United States for such training. Additional Qualification Requirements: To qualify at the GP-15 level,your resume must demonstrate at least five years of graduate training in the specialty of the position to be filled, or five years of equivalent experience and training. You will receive credit for all experience material to the position, including experience gained in religious, civic, welfare, service, and organizational activities, regardless of whether you received pay.
