We are seeking a Cook to work in the Metabolic Kitchen to provide food for patients on various research protocols. In this position, you will perform a wide variety of food service and cooking functions including food preparation, sanitation, and service duties.

Duties

Serve as a mid-level cook in the Metabolic Kitchen and Food Service Section Kitchen preparing food to fulfill requirements for regular and special diets; preparing and cooking a full range of foods; roasting, broiling, baking, frying, boiling, steaming, and stewing meats, fish, and poultry as well as slicing meat; l ordering, issuing and food storage in accordance with inventory and sanitation requirements. Operate specialized equipment to cook food in large quantities and rapidly chill and store the prepared items under refrigeration while following special health and safety procedures. Take daily inventory of items stored in the production unit and communicate any needs to supervisor of items needed for food production. Maintain clean sanitary and orderly work area; complete washing and related tasks. Perform any other food service related duties such as weighing and measuring food items, checking trays, serving on the tray line, delivering and picking up trays, preparing special feeding and trays for research protocols, breaking down tray-line by removing unused food to an appropriate storage or discarding, and delivering soiled pans and utensils to pot washing area.

Requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship requirement or proof of being a U.S. National must be met by closing date.
  • Employment is subject to the successful completion of a background investigation, verification of qualifications, completion of onboarding forms, submission of required documents, and any other job-related requirement before or after appointment.

  • Frequently lifts or moves objects weighing up to 40 pounds, and occasionally lift of moves objects weighing over 40 pounds with the assistance of lifting devices or other workers.
  • Performs work requiring continual standing and walking, and frequent stooping, reaching, pushing, pulling and bending.
  • This position requires weekend hours, night shifts, regular or rotational shifts, holiday hours.
  • If selected, you must pass a pre-employment medical examination, provide evidence of immunization, and be free from communicable diseases.

Qualifications

Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Qualification Standard Handbook X-118C. Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most blue-collar positions, you must meet any screen-out element listed, and show through experience and training that you possess the level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position. The approved job elements for this occupation are listed as follows: Ability to do the work of Cook without more than normal supervision i.e. Cooking and Serving (Screen-out element). Knowledge of work practices, cleanliness, neatness, and sanitation. Ability to do quantity cooking following written instructions. Ability to use kitchen utensils and equipment. Knowledge of cooking ingredients. Knowledge of infection control and cleaning procedures for the preparation and storage of food items. Ability to work as a member of a team.
