This position is located in the Kayenta Service Unit, Division of Clinical Services, Pharmacy Branch, Kayenta, AZ. The purpose is to serve as the Supervisory Pharmacist for the Inpatient Section. Incumbent is responsible for management and administration of personnel policies and procedures, providing ongoing analysis to develop programs commensurate with the highest quality of care, and to direct and manage programs and activities of the Inpatient Pharmacy.

The incumbent: Develops an affirmation action plan for the area supervised including appropriate objectives and goals, and monitors and periodically assesses progress, in conjunction with the Chief of Pharmacy. Keeps informed of, supports, and communicates to employees EEO policies, plans, and programs. Seeks out and utilizes available resources, including appropriate personnel generalists/specialists, EEO Specialists, and training resources in conducting these responsibilities. Determines the qualifications and competence and recommend a sufficient number of qualified and competent persons to provide care services. Provide clinical training and development to assist the inpatient pharmacy staff in meeting their goals for advancement. Serves as the Contracting Officer's Technical Representative (COTR) for various supplies, equipment and service contracts and other projects as assigned. Provides direct pharmaceutical services to inpatients. Selects, procures, prepares, and dispenses only those medications that conform to standards of quality for potency, purity, and effectiveness at the time they are administered to or used by patients. Packages, manufactures, and compounds products, including unit dosage and intravenous additives that are not commercially available. Reads and interprets prescriptions, computer dosages; weighs and measures drugs and mixes and compounds drugs and chemicals. Provides specialized expertise in the proper dosing of dangerous agents known to have narrow therapeutic benefit to toxic ratios. Reviews medical records for safety, therapeutic appropriateness, diagnosis/treatment, and effectiveness of drug therapy. Reviews patients' health records for therapeutic appropriateness including diagnosis/treatment, patient allergy and medication compatibility with other current medication ( drug interaction screening) and notifies provider/prescriber concerning any discrepancies. Follows established therapy monitoring protocols, notifying appropriate staff of findings and discrepancies, and recommending changes as necessary. Basic Requirements for the GS-12 (or equivalent) Grade Level: Note: Employees currently assigned to positions in this occupational series as of September 2017 will be considered to have met the basic requirements for the position occupied. Education: A doctoral degree in Pharmacy that is recognized by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (external link) (ACPE) or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education (external link) at the time the degree was obtained. Licensure: Applicants must be licensed to practice pharmacy in a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States. Experience: Applicant's qualifications background must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, abilities, and competencies necessary to perform the work of the position. Pharmacy work requires knowledge of the use, clinical effects, and composition of medications, including their chemical, biological, and physical properties. Qualifying professional pharmacy experience may involve, but is not limited to: Dispensing medications prescribed by physicians and other health practitioners and providing information to health practitioners and patients about proper usage of medications and side effects; Evaluating medication use patterns and outcomes for patients in hospitals or managed care organizations; Performing administrative, consultative, or staff advisory work for a medical facility's pharmacy program; Planning, monitoring and evaluating medication programs or regimens; Establishing medication-handling procedures for the storage and preservation of medications; Researching medical literature and/or clinical medication information to provide accurate responses to inquiries; and/or Maintaining all medication records required by law. Medical Requirements: Applicants must be able to distinguish basic colors. SUPERVISORY AND MANAGERIAL ABILITIES: Candidates must have demonstrated in their work experience or training that they possess, or have the potential to develop, the qualities of successful supervision, as listed under the appropriate category below: Ability to motivate, train and work effectively with subordinates who have a variety of background and training. Ability to accomplish the quality and quantity of work expected with set limits of cost and time. Ability to plan own work and carry out assignments effectively. Ability to communicate with others effectively, both orally and in writing, in working out solutions to problems or questions related to work. Ability to understand and further manage goals as these affect day-to-day work operations. Ability to develop improvements in or design new work methods and procedures. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: In addition to the requirements for the GS-11 (or equivalent) level, must have a minimum of one year of professional pharmacy experience. Your resume must demonstrate at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following type of work and/or tasks: experience in supervising staff; provide inpatient pharmacy services and the preparation of the complete range of sterile products, parenteral, enteral, and parenteral nutrition, and intravenous additives for a large medical facility; take steps to prevent drug reactions or interactions; ensure correct labeling, handling and storage of pharmaceutical products; advise physicians of possible safety issues; compound drugs as prescribed, including IV and chemotherapy drugs; teach pharmacy techniques/procedures to other pharmacists; conduct studies of drugs to determine their effectiveness and safety.
