The Maintenance Mechanic is located at the Birmingham Veterans Medical Center in the Facilities Management Service. The incumbent is assigned long-term and day to day jobs from the electronic work order system. They will exercise judgment in prioritizing assignments to subordinates and discuss problems and issues with the Maintenance Supervisor for extensive and difficult assignments.
Duties
The duties of the position include, but are not limited to:
Performs regularly scheduled preventive maintenance on a variety of kitchen, mechanical, materials handling, and other equipment.
Troubleshoots equipment malfunctions and failures and determines the extent of repairs and parts needed, estimated materials required, selects best work methods, techniques and trade practices and accomplishes the repair or overhaul.
Repairs light fixtures to include bulb, ballast, switch, and diffuser replacement. Circuit breaker resetting and troubleshooting; specifying replacement as required.
Repairs & maintain equipment such as sewage, water distribution systems, water closets, tubs, and showers.
Independently diagnoses, plans and completes projects or work orders involving routine repairs.
Maintains, including preventive maintenance, troubleshoots, tests, repairs, and modifies air conditioning, refrigeration, and ventilating systems and equipment.
Skills to make accurate coordinated measurements of temperatures, flow rates, and pressures, diagnose complex problems and make repairs, and adjust and balance varied and complex systems, interrelated components, and complicated controls, as well as install, replace or modify associated piping and ductwork.
Uses tools and equipment such as plumb bobs, mercury gauges, dividers, closet augers, hydrostatic pumps, and lead pots.
Uses his/her own initiative on maintenance and repair work to identify malfunctions or non-functions, and then proceed with corrective action.
Works from building plans, blueprints, and sketches, to plan and lay out the routing, placement, slant, slope, fall, and proper operation, of systems and equipment.
Uses tools and equipment such as plumb bobs, mercury gauges, dividers, closet augers, hydrostatic pumps, and lead pots.
Skilled in the use of all common electrical hand and power tools and testing equipment as required.
Work Schedule: Monday-Friday, 0700-1530 and Monday-Friday, 1500-2330

Physical Requirements: The incumbent works from ladders, scaffolding and hydraulic platforms. He/she often works in portions of the utility systems requiring attention that are cramped, dirty and hard-to-reach locations. The work may involve prolonged crouching and standing and frequent stooping, bending, kneeling, climbing and working in exhausting and uncomfortable positions. The incumbent frequently lifts or carries tools, equipment, ladders, scaffolding, parts and supplies up to 50 pounds. Occasionally, the incumbent will be required to lift and carry items over 75 pounds.
