You will serve as a HISTORIAN of NAVAL HISTORY AND HERITAGE COMMAND.

Duties

You will have strong knowledge of historical methodology and professional standards of evidence and documentation and skill in testing hypotheses and clarifying complex and casual relationships. You will develop a reasonable, well balanced, and factually accurate synthesis. You will present the results of historical research and analysis in a concise, logically oriented narrative, characterized by clarity, balance, and consistency with the evidence. You will be familiar with public and private documents holdings and of the professional literature to advise the general public on sources of historical information on the U.S. Navy, and expert grasp of U.S. naval, aviation, and military history.

Requirements

  • Generally, current federal employees applying for GS jobs must serve at least one year at the next lower grade level. This requirement is called time-in-grade. Time-in-grade requirements must be met by the closing date of this announcement.
  • Within the Department of Defense (DoD), the appointment of retired military members within 180 days immediately following retirement date to a civilian position is subject to the provisions of 5 United States Code 3326.

  • You will be required to obtain and maintain an interim and/or final security clearance prior to entrance on duty. Failure to obtain and maintain the required level of clearance may result in the withdrawal of a job offer or removal.
  • Successful completion of a pre-employment drug test (including marijuana) is required. A tentative offer of employment will be rescinded if you fail to report to the drug test appointment or pass the test. You will be subject to random testing.

Qualifications

GS12: In addition to the Basic Requirements for this position, your resume must also demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS11 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: (1) conducting extensive primary and secondary source research on historical topics that research and detail a major historical topic with additional research and treatment of related topics; (2) providing effective expertise, analysis and sound critical judgment in the evaluation of historical resources and accounting of historical events and relationships; (3) and delivering sophisticated oral and written communications of researched historical topics. GS11: In addition to the Basic Requirements for this position, your resume must also demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS09 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: (1) conducting basic research on historical topics; (2) collecting, analyzing and evaluating historical facts and determining the relative importance of historical evidence; and (3) preparing and compiling basic history studies on specific topics. Applicants must meet the following positive education qualifications requirements of the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualifications Standards Manual: Applicants must possess:

Degree: history; or related field that included at least 18 semester hours in history.

or

Combination of education and experience: courses equivalent to a major in history, or a major in a related field that included at least 18 semester hours in history, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
