This Air Conditioning Equipment Mechanic Leader position is within the Facilities Management Services at the Providence VA Healthcare System, located in Providence, RI. It is full-time at 40 hours per week.
Duties
The purpose of this position is to serve as the Work Leader for all of the HVAC Maintenance Mechanics (WG-10) in accomplishing a wide range of work involving installing and recognizing the cause of faulty heating, refrigeration and air conditioning equipment and making repairs on large systems that provide for a variety of air conditioning functions such as heating, cooling, humidifying, dehumidifying, cleaning, filtering, and circulating. Duties include, but are not limited to:
Ensures those supervised complete the daily assignments and work priorities and that they conform to the professional standards of the medical center;
Calculates airflow and the pressure-temperature characteristics for different systems;
Recognizes the cause of faulty equipment swiftly in order to reduce inoperative down-time to a minimum;
Performs complex repairs such as installing and fitting connecting rods, crank shafts, piston rings, bearings, and bushings;
Conducts checks on the refrigeration cycle on a variety of commercial and industrial systems used within the medical center;
Examines equipment components visually and audibly for the probability of leaks and performs prescribed test procedures and explores probable reasons for equipment failure;
Enters and monitors information in FMS automated data systems, including Works Hub, and Metasys Computer software systems;
Answers workers questions regarding procedures, policies, and written instruction/directives (e.g., technical orders); and
Other duties as assigned.
Work Schedule: Monday-Friday. Hours will be discussed during the interview process.

Some exceptions to this rule may apply if you have previously acquired tenure under a Title 5 appointment.

EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards.

Certification Requirement (Screen-Out): In accordance with Section 608 of the Clean Air Act, this position requires a current Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) approved Universal Certification. Applicants who do not meet this requirement are ineligible for further consideration.

Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: The work requires carrying of equipment, tools and testing devices that often weight as much as 50 pounds. Frequently motors and equipment components weigh several hundred pounds and are located in difficult to access locations that require significant maneuvering and require hoists, holders and rigging. Most of the equipment can be reached from the floor or from ladders. Occasionally, platforms, man lifts, and scaffolding are needed to reach parts of the system such as fans, electrical and water lines, and duct work. The incumbent is required to stoop, stretch, bend, kneel and work in tiring and uncomfortable position. The work may result in exposed to repeated, prolonged or concentrated amounts of refrigerant gases that may cause toxic effects on eyes, skin, and internal organs. There is an occasional requirement to work in drafty attic spaces and in cramped areas with low overheads.
