Duties
Direct firefighting operations at major fires or related manmade or natural emergencies occurring on installations or as required in accordance with negotiated mutual aid agreements with other federal state and local agencies.
Develop policy and guidance in compliance with established DoD and DLA Instructions, for the establishment and operation of an effective and efficient fire and emergency services program at an assigned DLA controlled facility.
Review fire protection and prevention related policies, procedures, regulations, training materials and other instructions to ensure they provide adequate guidance to meet the organizational goals relating to firefighting and prevention activities.
Develop short and long- range fire and emergency services goals for the management of organizational resources in terms of personnel, equipment, supplies, training and facilities.
Negotiate mutual aid agreements with Federal, state and local agencies in neighboring communities, monitors compliance and initiates revisions to formal arrangement as required.
Provide expert advice to the Installation Commander, Site Director and DLA Staff Directors as required regarding all aspects of fire prevention and protection within the assigned area of responsibility.

- Tour of Duty: 120 hours per pay period (Position is subject to shift rotation and assignment to abnormal tours of duty.)

- Individual must complete a pre-employment and an annual medical exam IAW DoD 6055.05-M to determine the reasonable likelihood of a firefighter’s ability to execute the arduous and rigorous essential functions of fire suppression and rescue.

- The position cannot be vacated during war or national emergency without seriously impairing the mission. Assignments may be performed at any job site within the organization.
- This position is considered a “Secondary” position within the firefighter Special Retirement System.
- Secondary positions are supervisory or administrative firefighter positions. Administrative positions whose duties are of an administrative nature for which the experience in a primary firefighter position is a prerequisite.
- This is a Drug Testing position. Individual must complete a pre-employment drug screening.
Qualifications
To qualify for a Fire Chief your resume and supporting documentation must support:A. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience that equipped you with the particular competencies to successfully perform the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the position to be filled. To qualify at the GS-12 level, applicants must possess one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-11 level or equivalent under other pay systems in the Federal service, military or private sector. Applicants must meet eligibility requirements including time-in-grade (General Schedule (GS) positions only), time-after-competitive appointment, minimum qualifications, and any other regulatory requirements by the cut-off/closing date of the announcement. Creditable specialized experience includes:
Supervising and managing the overall Fire and Emergency Services program.
Experience with fire prevention, public education, and life safety programs.
Determining proper emergency response/equipment needs in an emergency situation.
Managing the fire and emergency services training program.
B. SELECTIVE PLACEMENT FACTOR (SPF): Department of Defense (DoD) 6055.06-M, "Fire and Emergency Services Certification Program" identifies the level of performance required for all DoD Fire and Emergency Services personnel. The certifications listed below are the minimum mandatory certification requirements for this position. DoD Incumbents shall possess DoD Certifications, or equivalent accredited certifications from the International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC) or the National Professional Qualifications System (Pro-Board):

Hazardous Materials Incident Commander
Other Requirements:
Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation Certification (CPR)
Valid State Driver's License
Other training requirements that must be obtained within one year of employment and maintained:
