The Health Technician at the Richard L. Roudebush VA Medical Center's Community Based Outpatient Clinic (CBOC) in Lafayette, Indiana provides assistance of a technical, specialized, or support nature to health and medical personnel in the diagnosis or treatment of patient illnesses or medical conditions.
Duties
Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Provides assistance of a technical, specialized, or support nature to health and medical personnel in the diagnosis or treatment of patient illnesses or medical conditions.
Supports medical and health care professionals in tests and procedures to diagnose and treat medical conditions.
Performs technical work in support of diagnostic tests and procedures.
Operates and maintains medical instruments and equipment for diagnostic and treatment procedures
Receives requests or instructions for procedures and interprets them for medical or health care personnel.
Explains procedures, positions patients for desired results, and cushions and shields patients as appropriate.
Adjusts and adapts specialized equipment for difficult procedures.
Schedules procedures and coordinates with other services.
Maintains administrative and clinical files.
Assists medical staff with or performs diagnostic procedures used to diagnose medical conditions.
Checks appointments and tests, and coordinates all activities and appointments for the clinical area
Performs difficult specialized tests and measurements that are preliminary to the physician's treatment of the patient.
Monitors patients for adverse reactions and takes corrective action based on established policy and past experience.
Provides clerical and administrative support to the unit and maintains patient's records/charts.
Collects data from patient's records and prepares summaries of records in response to a variety of requests.
Performs direct patient support work to include collecting information from patients, providing personal patient care, and educating patients on pretesting and post procedure activities.
Provides the customer with consistent information according to established policies and procedures.
Work Schedule: 7:30am- 4:00pm

Qualifications
To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement.
Individual Occupational Requirements GS 6 grade level (full performance level):
Specialized Experience: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS 5 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Specialized experience may include but is not limited to: Receives requests or instructions for procedures from medical or health care personnel; explains procedures, positions patients for desired results, and cushions and shields patients as appropriate; determines technical factors, sets controls and operates equipment; sets up and adjusts accessory equipment required, and set indicators for measurements or readings necessary for requested procedures; performs difficult specialized tests and measurements that are preliminary to the physician's treatment of the patient; and, performs a range of diagnostic support duties such as taking, recording and reporting deviations in vital signs, pulse oximetry, weight, taking specimens, labeling specimens for the laboratory.

Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Physical Requirements: Work pace ranges from sedentary to a very rapid pace to include walking, standing, bending, and reaching. Includes lifting and positioning patients in/onto exam position or on/off gurney, and or wheelchair. Work requires specific, but common, physical abilities such as agility and dexterity to position patients for examination or treatment in usual alternate positions for patients with common disabilities. Heavy lifting occasionally may be required to relocate clinic equipment or patients.
