About the Position: This position is located at Brooke Army Medical Center at Fort Sam Houston, Texas. A recruitment incentive may be authorized. Salary negotiation may be available for those candidates who are new to Federal service.

Duties

Conduct comprehensive psychosocial assessments to assist in the development of treatment plans. Conduct crisis counseling with individuals and families to lessen impact of acute, chronic, or terminal illnesses. Design appropriate therapeutic activities by assessing individual patient needs. Coordinate with primary medical team to provide medical play therapy for patients and families. Assist care team during treatment by developing chart documentation forms and procedures for medical services. Participate in educational programs for medical staff, schools, religious organizations, or private groups. Prepare statistical based reports for organizational awareness of the program progress and goals. Utilizes a variety of computer-based programs and software packages to prepare reports.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • A Personnel Security Investigation is required.
  • This position has specific initial background investigation and periodic re-verification requirements since its duties require interaction with children and youth under the age of eighteen (18) years of age on a recurring basis.
  • Selectees will be required to sign a statement (Condition of Employment) consenting to seasonal influenza vaccinations or must provide a recognized exemption.
  • This position is a Testing Designated Position subject to pre-employment screening and random drug testing. Selectees will be required to consent to participation in random drug urinalysis testing.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain Child Life Specialist certification.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Red Cross or American Heart Association. Advanced certification (e.g., ALS) does not supersede BLS.
  • Immunization screening is required. Hepatitis B immunization is required for all positions with direct patient contact. Applicants may be required to show proof of other immunizations depending on the type of position.
  • This position may include shift work (evenings, weekends, holidays).
  • This position may require rotating shifts (i.e. work schedule that requires employees to continuously rotate from one shift to another at predetermined intervals).
  • This position may require the incumbent to work weekends and/or holidays.

Who May Apply: US Citizens In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Basic Requirement for Child Life Specialist: Degree: Bachelor's degree (or higher degree) in behavioral or social science, or related disciplines appropriate to the position. OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience that provided the applicant with knowledge of one or more of the behavioral or social sciences equivalent to a major in the field. OR Experience: Four years of appropriate experience that demonstrated that the applicant has acquired knowledge of one or more of the behavioral or social sciences equivalent to a major in the field. In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below: Specialized Experience: In order to qualify, your resume must demonstrate the you possess at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-09 grade level in the Federal service which includes providing educational resources to support patients and families, conducting comprehensive psychosocial assessments, and assisting in the development of a treatment plan. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the second lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-09). OR Education: 3 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree.
