This Medical Instrument Technician (EKG) position is located in the Specialty Care Service, located at the Brockton and West Roxbury campuses. This is a full time position at 40 hours per week.

Duties

Individuals in this assignment assume full administrative and professional responsibility for planning and directing the work of subordinate technicians. Typically these duties include assigning and evaluating the work of subordinate staff; providing medical instrument technician (EKG) services in more complex cases; reviewing and making recommendations regarding new and emerging procedures; providing instruction and training to new staff; interviewing candidates for positions; recommending selections, advancements, promotions; evaluating performance; taking disciplinary action when necessary; and identifying educational or training needs. Work Schedule: Monday thru Friday, 6:30am-3:00pm or 8:00am-4:30pm Compressed/Flexible:Not available. Telework: Not available. Virtual: This is not a virtual position. The incumbent may be required to travel to other VA campuses and CBOC's. Veterans' preference does not apply for internal or other current permanent Federal agency employees. Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Education. There are no specific educational requirements for this occupation. Education may be substituted for experience only at the GS-4 and GS-5 levels. See the grade requirements part of this standard for information regarding educational substitutions. Licensure or Certification. Licensure or Certification is not required for this occupation; however, it is strongly desirable at GS-6 or above as evidence of possession of the essential knowledge, skills, and abilities. For all specialties identified in this standard, Basic and Advanced Cardiac Life Support certifications are desirable. Training which does not result in official certification does not meet this definition. English Language Proficiency. Medical Instrument Technicians must be proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with chapter 2, section D, paragraph 5a, this part. Grade Determinations GS-08 Medical Instrument Technician (EKG): Experience. At least 1 year of experience comparable to the next lower grade level which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, abilities, and other characteristics related to the duties of the positions to be filled. Medical instrument technicians (EKG) at this level perform complicated examinations or treatments for which there are no standard instructions or procedures. They utilize knowledge of anatomy and physiology including an in depth understanding of the functioning of the major systems and internal organs to interpret requests and to recognize the need for additional tests or a different position. Knowledge of pharmacology including the classification and administration of drugs, patient responses, and common dosages as related to this specialty is required. The technician has the ability to perform Signal Averaged ECG, Tilt table monitoring, electrophysiology monitoring, and event monitoring. For all assignments above the full performance level, the higher-level duties must consist of significant scope, complexity (difficulty), and range of variety, and be performed by the incumbent at least 25% of the time In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the following KSAs: Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills and Abilities : Knowledge of pharmacology related to specialized procedures. Ability to provide briefings and orientations to hospital staff including physicians. Knowledge of a variety of related acute disorders and diseases, their affects on organs and methods of treatment. Ability to perform more complex procedures such as SAECG (Signal Averaged ECG), Tilt table monitoring, electrophysiology monitoring and event monitoring. Ability to provide, or provide for, staff development and training. Ability to manage and supervise employees. GS-09 Medical Instrument Technician Supervisory (EKG) : Experience. At least 1 year of experience comparable to the next lower grade level which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, abilities, and other characteristics related to the duties of the positions to be filled. In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the following KSAs: Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Knowledge of more complex examination and treatment procedures and techniques such as SAECG, ETT< Tilt table monitoring electrophysiology monitoring and event monitoring in order to provide training and supervision in these procedures to develop analysis interpretation formats, and to receive inquiries concerning results. Knowledge of JCAHO and other regulatory requirements. Ability to communicate effectively and professionally with employees at varying grade levels. Ability to provide or provide for, staff development and training. Ability to manage and supervise employees. Certification GS 09-Medical Instrument Technician (EKG): Certification by Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI) as a Certified Cardiographic Technician (CCT) is highly desirable at this level. Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certifications are also desirable for employees at this level. References: VA HANDBOOK 5005/54 PART II APPENDIX G27 MEDICAL INSTRUMENT TECHNICIAN QUALIFICATION STANDARDGS-649 Veterans Health Administration. The full performance level of this vacancy is GS-9. Physical Requirements: Light lifting, under 15 lbs., moderate carrying, 15-44 lbs., reaching above shoulder, use of fingers, standing 4-6 hours; hearing, aid permitted. Duties require extensive use of fingers to perform keyboarding and the ability to hear requests by phone and in person. Version must be adequate to read and prepare documents.
