The Restorative Nursing Assistant will carry out the Restorative services according to the plan of care using interventions that assist/promote the Resident's ability to attain his or her maximum functional potential and using a safe manner. The Restorative care activities are based on the Community Living Center's Restorative Care Program designed by the Restorative Coordinator. The Nursing Assistant is an integral member of the nursing care team in direct service to veterans and families.
Duties
The Restorative Nursing Assistant duties include, but are not limited to:
Demonstrates knowledge of geriatric care to participate in a Restorative/rehabilitative plan of care.
Educates Resident on his/her Restorative care programs and involves family members as appropriate.
Records accurate data, level of assist, and documents Resident's responses to interventions related to Restorative Care activities daily.
Communicates with neighborhood NA's regarding Resident's status and Restorative care requirements.
Performs care according to the CLC Restorative Care Programs including: Bowel and Bladder toileting, Bed Mobility and Ambulation, Transfers, ADLs, ROM, Splint and Brace Care, Amputation and Prosthetic Care, Restorative Dining and Communication
Follows scheduled toileting plan with Residents if needed during their planned time or activity with Resident.
Performs supportive instruction, cueing assistance and/or supervision in bed mobility procedures which include Resident participation in positioning, moving to either side, turning, moving to head and foot of bed, and moving from supine to sitting.
Ambulates Resident using appropriate bed mobility assist, sit/stand and assistive device as appropriate.
Identifies and performs proper transfer procedures using appropriate techniques, body mechanics, and equipment.
Encourages Resident self-care with all ADLs and assists and/or supervises the Resident with personal hygiene, bathing, dressing, and grooming as appropriate.
Performs supportive instruction, cueing, assistance and/or supervision in active or active assisted range of motion exercises.
Performs passive range of motion knowing the guidelines of limitation.
Provides supportive instruction, cueing, and assistance using verbal and physical guidance and direction that teaches the Resident how to apply or applies the splint/brace as needed and monitors skin integrity and provides appropriate hygiene at the site where the prosthesis attaches to the body before donning/doffing.
Provides education and or assistance with amputation or newly acquired prosthetics.
Assists and monitors assessed needs and follows interventions for Restorative dining.
Assists the Resident in using newly acquired functional communication skills or assisting the Resident in using residual communication and adaptive devices.
Work Schedule: Monday - Friday 07:30 - 4:00pm with every other weekend rotation

Qualifications
Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.
Basic Requirements:
a. Citizenship. Citizen of the United States. (Non-citizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with chapter 3, section A, paragraph 3g, this part.)
b. Education or Training. One year above high school with courses related to the [NA] occupation. Completion of an intensive, specialized, occupation-related course of study of less than one year [ ] as a nursing assistant may also meet in full the experience requirements for GS-3.
c. Physical Requirements. See VA Directive and Handbook 5019.
d. English Language Proficiency. [NAs] must be proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with VA Handbook 5005, part II, chapter 3, section A, paragraph 3j.
e. Grandfathering Provisions. All Nursing Assistants employed in VHA on the effective date of this qualification standard are considered to have met all qualification requirements for the series and grade held that are part of the basic requirements of the occupation. For employees who do not meet all the basic requirements required in this standard, but who met the qualifications applicable to the position at the time they were appointed to it, the following provisions apply:
[(1)] Employees who are appointed on a temporary basis prior to the effective date of the qualification standard may not have their temporary appointment extended or be reappointed, on a temporary or permanent basis, until they fully meet the basic requirements of the standard.
[(2)] If an employee who was retained (grandfathered) under this provision leaves the occupation, the employee loses protected status of the grandfathering provision and must meet the full VA qualification standard basic requirements in effect at the time of reentry to the occupation.
Preferred Experience: Two or more years of Nursing Assistant experience.
Grade Determinations: Will be made in accordance with VA HANDBOOK 5005/81 PART II APPENDIX G46 at time of tentative job offer.

The full performance level of this vacancy is GS-05. The actual grade at which an applicant may be selected for this vacancy is in the range of GS-03 to GS-05.
Physical Requirements: This position requires visual acuity, keen hearing, clear distinctive speech, and manual dexterity. This position requires potentially long periods of continued walking, standing, stooping, sitting, bending, pulling, and pushing. Transferring patients and objects may be required. Mechanical patient lifts are provided. The incumbent may be exposed to infected patients and contaminated materials and may be required to don protective clothing in isolation situations or operative/invasive procedures. The incumbent may occasionally be exposed to patients who are combative secondary to delirium, dementia, or psychiatric disorders. The incumbent must be a mature, flexible, sensible individual capable of working effectively in stressful situations, able to shift priorities based on patient needs. Must complete annual Employee Health requirements, such as annual TB screening or testing, as a condition of employment.
