The Southern Arizona VA Health Care System is currently recruiting for a Supervisory Medical Technologist (Microbiology/Molecular) to work in the Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Service. The incumbent provides first line supervision to several laboratory sections Microbiology and Molecular.

Duties

The duties for the position are but not limited to the following: Plan and schedule on-going work. Adjusts staffing levels or work procedures. Choose methods for achieving work goals, objectives, and management strategies. Day-to-day supervision of highly complex test performance. Responsible for monitoring test analyzes and specimen examinations to ensure acceptable levels of performance. Assure corrective action is initiated when test performance deviates from established performance specifications. Assure orientation, training, and competency assessment of staff. Implement and monitor quality management activities. Perform the full range of supervisory duties. Recommends appointment, plans and assigns work, gives advice and counsel, and evaluates work of subordinates. May be a purchase card holder and as such, will comply with all the acquisition regulation, both Federal, VA and local to include 8A, small business, Javis Wagner 0-Day Act, and mandatory sources. Inform the Laboratory Manager, PALMS of major problems and decisions in these areas. Work Schedule: Monday - Friday 7:30 am - 4:00 pm Telework: Not Available Virtual: This is not a virtual position. Qualifications

Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. English Language: proficient in spoken and written English. [To be appointed under authority of 38 U.S.C., chapter 73 or 74, to serve in a direct patient-care capacity in VHA, applicants must be proficient in written and spoken English.] Basic Education/experience: (A). A bachelor's degree or higher from an accredited college or university in medical laboratory science, medical technology, clinical laboratory science or in a related science (e.g., laboratory sciences such as chemistry, biochemistry, biology, microbiology, immunology, etc.). AND completion of a medical technology clinical practice program. Clinical practice programs completed after 1974 must have been accredited by the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS), Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP, formerly CAHEA), or the Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES). The professional curriculum may have consisted of a post-baccalaureate certificate program or be integrated into a four-year program of study that culminated in a baccalaureate degree. OR (B). A bachelor's degree from an accredited college/university, including 16 semester hours of biological science (with one course in microbiology), 16 semester hours of chemistry (with one course in organic or biochemistry) and one course in mathematics, AND two years of post-certification clinical laboratory experience (e.g., blood banking, chemistry, hematology, microbiology, immunology, clinical microscopy, etc.) within the last ten years as a certified Medical Laboratory Technician by the American Society for Clinical Pathology Board of Certification (ASCP-BOC), American Society of Clinical Pathology Board of Registry (ASCP-BOR) or American Medical Technologists (AMT). This experience must include performing moderate and/or high complexity testing in blood banking, chemistry, hematology, microbiology immunology and clinical microscopy (or categorical experience which matches categorical certification) in a clinical laboratory. OR (C). A bachelor's degree from an accredited college/university, including 16 semester hours of biological science (with one course in microbiology), 16 semester hours of chemistry (with one course in organic or biochemistry) and one course in mathematics, AND five years of clinical laboratory experience within the last ten years performing moderate and/or high complexity testing in blood banking, chemistry, hematology, microbiology, immunology and clinical microscopy (or categorical experience which matches categorical certification) in a clinical laboratory. Certification: Must possess the appropriate certification as a MT, MLS, or CLS given by the ASCP-BOC, ASCP-BOR, or AMT. Grade Determinations: GS-12: Possess 1 year of creditable, progressively responsible experience at the next lower grade level (GS-11) recommending appointments, plans and assigns work, provides advice and counsel and evaluates work of subordinates which fully meet the knowledge, skills, and abilities at that level. Preferred Experience: Minimum of 2 years Microbiology experience within the last 5 years or 1 year of Microbiology experience within the last 3 years. Experience in Molecular is preferred, not required. References: VA Handbook 5005/72, Part II, Appendix G24, Medical Technologist Qualification Standard GS - 0644. . The full performance level of this vacancy is GS - 12. Physical Requirements: Light lifting(Less than 15lbs); Reaching above the shoulder; Use of fingers; Standing (2 hours); Repeating bending (2 hours); Ability to distinguish basic colors; Hearing aid permitted.
