This position performs as a diagnostic Radiologic Technologist, performing radiographic examinations. Receives patients, explains methods of procedures positions patients, selects and sets technical factors, sets up and adjusts assessory equipment and makes exposures necessary for the requested procedures. Performs bone density exams. The position is located at the Peoria, Illinois CBOC.

Duties

Performs radiographic procedures using the proper exposure techniques, including manual and phototimed exposures using CR, exposure tables, intensifying screens, buckies, collimators, filters, grids, and other other technical aids to produce radiographs of diagnostics quality with the minimum of retakes. Performs procedures using digital diagnostic units that provide fully integrated digital Bucky systems for routine skeletal diagnostics. These systems institute another step in a cassettless environment. Digital technology unites outlines the high ergonomics of Bucky technology and state-of-the-art detectors in imaging processing. Reviews requests for appropriateness before performing exams. Incumbent uses appropriateness criteria, the clinical history provided on the request, interviews the patient, reviews the patient chart or contacts the ordering clinician as needed for clarification. Presents discrepant or deficient indications to the Supervisory Technologist or radiologist as appropriate. Performs standard radiographs and bone density exams. Utilizes textbooks, journals, colleagues, radiologists and other references to perform exams requiring specialized or modified techniques Identifies and alerts the radiologist of significant abnormalities requiring prompt or essential attention such as pneumoperitoneum, fracture, pneumothorax, bowel obstruction, etc. Works independently, without a supervisor while working at the Peoria CBOC. Coordinates workflow, interacts with supervisory and regular staff from other departments. Supports CPT coding compliance, utilizes appropriate CPT codes for the exams performed, performs timely and accurate case editing. Schedules, reschedules or overbooks patients as needed.. Maintains adequate inventory of supplies, ensuring that outdated, damaged or otherwise unusable items are discarded. Checks local PACS system to ensure images were received, labeled, and in the correct order. Adjusts contrast and bright to enhance images. Checks labels and markers. Qualifications

Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Certification. Must be certified in general radiologic technology by the American Registry of Radiologic Technology, Radiography (ARRT) (R). Education - Completion of a full-time training course of at least 24 months in duration (or the equivalent) in a post-high school diagnostic radiologic technology program, evidenced by a certificate or an associate degree, accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT) or from [other accrediting agencies as recognized by the Department of Education (DOE). Grade Determinations: GS-08 - At this level, you must have at least one year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-07) that demonstrates the clinical competencies described at that level. In addition to the experience above, must be able to demonstrate all of the following Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs): Ability to check system for operation and assess acceptable performance based on established guidelines. Knowledge of calibration parameters and the ability to make adjustments as needed. Knowledge of patient's clinical record, diagnosis, and laboratory results. Ability to monitor patient's physiologic changes during the procedure and keep the radiologist informed. Skill in using tact, diplomacy, and courtesy in dealings with the customer base, patients, staff, family, visitors, and volunteers. Knowledge of anatomy and physiology, and cross-sectional anatomy, recognizing unusual images, and determining proper positioning to best demonstrate areas of interest. The full performance level of this vacancy is GS-08. References: VA Handbook 5005/119, Part II Appendix G25 Physical Requirements: The technologists is involved in long periods of standing, walking, carrying heavy objects such as cassettes and positioning patients who are disabled or unconscious. Work Environment: The work area is climatically controlled and well lit. Use of safety precautions against radiation exposures such as lead shields, aprons, and gloves are required. Minimal exposure values adequate to complete a diagnostic study are mandated. The technologist will not expose himself/herself to x-ray by holding a patient or being in a room unprotected during an exposure
