This is a Surgical Technician position at the Charlie Norwood VA Medical Center in Augusta, GA.
DIRECT HIRE AUTHORITY: This position is being filled using Direct-Hire Authority (5 CFR 337.201) for this occupational series.
Qualifications
To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 11/02/2023.
You may qualify for this position based on the specialized experience and/or education as described below:
Specialized Experience: At least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-6 that has equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSA's) to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to
the work of the position. Specialized experience for this position typically includes but is not limited to:
Preparing patients for surgery;
Setting up surgical instrumentation, equipment, and sterile environment;
Handling instruments, supplies and/or equipment during surgical procedures;
Anticipating the needs of the surgeon and responding promptly;
Exercising accountability of all surgical instruments and equipment during surgical procedures.
OR
Education: Successfully completed one (1) full year of graduate level education that demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position and is directly related to the work of the position. 18 semester hours should be considered as satisfying the one (1) year of full-time study requirement.
OR
Combination: Equivalent combination of specialized experience and graduate level education. For this position, equivalent combination means 6 months of specialized experience and 9 semester hours of graduate level education.

Preferred qualifications: Minimum of 1-2 years of experience in hospital or surgery center.
Physical Requirements: The position requires standing for long periods, lifting, pushing, walking, bending, stooping, transferring, and transporting patients and heavy packs. Incumbent must be dexterous in passing instruments to surgeons without compromising principles of aseptic technique and in a manner requiring little or no effort from the surgeon. He/she must be emotionally stable and able to adjust to different types of personalities/behaviors using cheerfulness, compassion, courtesy, and empathy. He/she must be quick and dependable in taking emergency actions.
