The Pathways Internship Program allows students to join VA in career positions that emphasize long-term training and development. You will serve as a member of the Miami VA Healthcare System in Prosthetics & Sensory Aids Service. The work has a high visibility and a positive attitude and a motivation to expedite patient care and satisfaction are critical to accomplishing the VA mission.

Duties

This position is being filled under the Pathways Internship Program. The program is designed to provide students enrolled in a wide variety of educational institutions, from high school to graduate level, with paid work opportunities in agencies to explore Federal careers while still in school. The Internship provides managers a ready source of student employees and potential permanent employees upon completion of the program requirements. It also provides the student with work experience directly related to the curriculum studies or career goals while offering eligibility for non-competitive conversion to permanent employment upon completion. Major Duties: Receives and analyzes prosthetic requests; Examines clinical health records and claims folders to determine legal and medical entitlement for items and services; Collects and enters information into databases; Reviews incoming shipments for correct quantities, items, and initiates actions to correct deficiencies Work Schedule: Monday-Friday, 8:00 A.M.-4:30 P.M.

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 11/02/2023. Internship Program: To be eligible, applicants must be accepted for enrollment or currently enrolled and seeking a degree (diploma, certificate, etc.) in a qualifying educational institution, on a full or half-time basis as defined by the institution in which you are enrolled. You may qualify based on education and/or experience as described below: Specialized Experience: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade (GS-04) in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: Receiving & analyzing prosthetic requests; Determining legal and medical entitlement for patients & Veterans; Receiving calls and visitors and refers appropriately; Entering data into databases; Reviewing incoming shipments OR, Education: Applicants may substitute education for the experience required. To qualify based on education for this grade level you must have a Bachelor's Degree or 4 full years of post-high school leading to a bachelor's degree or equivalent degree. NOTE: Transcripts (unofficial or official) must be submitted with your application materials. Education cannot be credited without documentation OR, Combination: Applicants may also combine education and experience to qualify at this level. You must have an combination of specialized experience and education beyond 2 years (beyond 60 semester hours). You will be rated on the following Competencies for this position: Attention to DetailComputer SkillsVeteran and Customer Focus Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Physical Requirements: The work is somewhat sedentary but requires some physical effort such as walking, standing, bending and carrying boxes or other inventory items. Duties involve extended periods of working at computer terminal; some climbing is associated with stocking items in storage areas. You must be able to lift or carry items weighing up to 50 pounds.
