This position is located within a National Forest. The primary purpose of this position is to serve as a technical assistant in the performance of a variety of hydrology tasks, either as a crew member or individual worker.
Duties
Serves as a senior hydrologic technician performing semi-professional work in support of professional engineers and hydrologists.
Performs field and office work related to the operation and maintenance of the district water resource projects.
Processes data for hydrologic studies and provides technical support during emergency situations, such as floods, hurricanes, etc.
Installs, tests and maintains hydrologic and water quality instruments measuring precipitation, streamflow, stage, dissolved oxygen, pH, conductivity, turbidity, suspended solids, etc., for both recording and non-recording types.
Makes stream flow, water levels, sediment, and water quality measurements.
Installs gages involves making a reconnaissance survey of the gage site, establishing work schedules, contracting work as required, preparing plans, coordinating work with landowners, and overseeing the installation of the gage.
Technician uses initiative and resourcefulness to resolve installation problems.
Tests recording equipment, checking the operating abilities of each piece of equipment in the field and making adjustments as necessary to assure accurate records are obtained from the equipment.
Technician is expected to know the complexities of the different instruments (e.g., stream gaging, precipitation, water quality, etc., and maintaining the equipment in operational condition).
Maintains gages, setting up an annual maintenance schedule showing when each gage is to be visited and who will perform the maintenance.
Coordinates with all outside parties involved in getting to the gage, checks all elements of the gaging station for wear and tear, records problem areas and initiates corrective action.
Collects and notates all data records relative to corrections that need to be made when the data is processed. Performs a variety of computations and analysis of water resource data.
Monitors flow conditions at all stream gaging sites operated by the district and determines when and where to make flow measurements to maintain a valid rating curve.
Plots stream stages versus flow data on a previously determined rating curve or use to begin a new rating curve. Brings shifts in the rating curve to the Team Leaders attention.
Establishes monuments at gaging stations, and vertical and horizontal control at designated points using a transit or level. Performs high water staking as required during major flood events.
Performs other duties that involve collecting, water quality and sediment samples and transporting the samples to a designated laboratory, making tidal cycle measurements and developing special tools/methods to perform work more efficiently.

Qualifications

GS-09: Applicants must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-7 grade level; OR a master's or equivalent graduate degree or 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree or LL.B. or J.D., if related; OR an appropriate combination of specialized experience and education (only graduate education in excess of 18 semester hours may be used to qualify applicants for this grade level). The education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university and demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work.
Examples of specialized experience include: Performs hydrologic technician work such as, preparing, analyzing, charting, annotating forms, and completing hydrographs; Assists in the performance of a variety of hydrology tasks such as conducting, monitoring, coordinating, and controlling various phases of data collection and analysis projects or operations.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
