The incumbent serves as a Public Affairs Specialist, advanced trainee, performs specific assignments in the unit public affairs program to acquire developmental experience for higher-level duties and responsibilities.

Duties
Public involvement, and environmental education activities on the unit, to develop experience in various phases of public affairs.)
Prepares information releases and programs for the press, radio, schools, and television)
Disseminate information about the mission, programs, and activities of the Forest Service.)
Drafts pamphlets, brochures, booklets, etc., and as directed, arranges for printing.)
Answers routine requests for information about the Forest Service and its programs.)
Presents programs to groups on Forest Service programs and activities. Drafts assigned portions of programs.)
GS-09 Participates in short-term and long-term strategic planning for the Region’s cooperative education and youth engagement programs.
Prepares audio-visual programs, according to instructions, for both specific presentations and for broad repeated use.)
Requirements
- You must be a US Citizen or US National.

Qualifications

Specialized Experience Requirement:
GS-1035-07 One year of specialized experience equivalent to GS-5. Examples of specialized experience one or more of the following: Perform developmental assignments in support of a Public Affairs program; participate in planning, organizing, and executing information, external relations, public involvement, and environmental education activities on the unit, to develop experience in various phases of public affairs; interact with the public (e.g. providing information and answering questions); assist with preparation of information releases, brochures, and/or pamphlets and presentations to the public; present programs to groups on Forest Service programs and activities; draft assigned portions of programs
OR
Completed at least 1 year of graduate level education (18 semester hours) with coursework in communications, journalism, public relations or a related field.
OR
A combination of graduate level education and specialized experience that is directly related to this position that together meets the qualification requirements for this position.
OR
In the upper third of the graduating class of a college or university or one of its major subdivisions, such as the College of Liberal Arts or the School of Business Administration; or a member of a national scholastic honor society that meets the minimum requirements of the Association of College Honor Societies (excluding freshman honor society); or have a 3.0 or higher out of a possible 4.0 ("B" or better) as recorded on their official transcript, or as computed based on 4 years of education, or as computed based on courses completed during the final 2 years of the curriculum; or 3.5 or higher out of a possible 4.0 ("B+" or better) based on the average of the required courses completed in the major field or the required courses in the major field completed during the final 2 years of the curriculum (GPA will be rounded to one decimal place. For example, 2.95 rounds to 3.0 and 2.94 rounds to 2.9).
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

TIME IN GRADE REQUIREMENT: If you are a current federal employee in the General Schedule (GS) pay plan and applying for a promotion opportunity, you must meet time-in-grade (TIG) requirements of 52 weeks of service at the next lower grade level in the normal line of progression for the position being filled. This requirement must be met by the closing date of this announcement.
