This position is located within a National Forest. The primary purpose of this position is to operate motor vehicles exceeding 32,000 pounds and to operate engineering equipment.

Duties

Drives one or more trucks such as dump trucks, truck tractors, or truck and full trailer combinations, and/or specially designed trailer units weighing over 32,000 pounds. Hauls road aggregate, cargo, or slip in water tanker and tows equipment trailers with gross vehicle weight restriction up to 110,000 pounds. Couples and uncouples the truck tractor and semi-trailer and connects and disconnects the air brakes and electrical lines. Ensures cargo is secured to prevent shifting or falling while in transit and to minimize the possibility of vehicle sway. Maneuvers vehicles within close tolerances when driving and/or backing over uneven ground, in narrow or congested areas, and when positioning vehicles at loading docks and construction sites. Performs operations in a variety of driving situations: Interstate highways, metropolitan areas, and complicated gravel and dirt mountain roads which are typically narrow and winding with steep grades and sharp turns. Selects the safest, most direct, and legally allowed route to be followed and identifies alternative routes to be used if emergency situations arise. Operates construction and engineering equipment to include, front-end loaders, backhoes, bulldozers with articulating blades, and graders in a variety of situations, narrow country or mountain roads/steep winding grades/native surfacing gravel pits. Performs inspections, service, maintenance, minor repairs and adjustments to vehicles and machines. Reports major mechanical repairs to supervisor. Maintains proper records.
