This position is located within a National Foreston either a Forest Service Research or National Forest unit. The primary purpose of this position is to perform duties in support of the wildlife management program.

Duties

The work performed is traditional hands-on wildlife work. The incumbent performs any of the assignments listed below related to all types of wildlife, including small mammals, birds, carnivores, megafauna, fish, reptiles, amphibians, etc. Frequently, there is an integrated approach to address resource management issues, where the incumbent works as a member of a team to collaboratively achieve mutual goals and objectives. Individually, or as part of a team, performs established wildlife-related assignments. Assignments involve constructing or completing habitat project work such as: watershed development, fencing, or clearing areas to establish food that is more desirable or cover habitat. Examples of clearing areas to establish food that is more desirable, or cover habitat are assesses habitat environments, requirements, and inhabitants of wildlife. Collects and accumulates data through a variety of techniques; examines information and develops reports of results with suitable recommendations. Collects facts for development of wildlife management plans and coordination of wildlife needs for environmental analysis reports. Incumbent supports avian community studies. Conducts field surveys of birds requiring specialized experience identifying birds by sight or sound. Performs assignments which involve sampling forest vegetation using dbh tape and clinometer. Collects data following a prescribed protocol. Identifies multiple species by sight or sound. May assist in capture and banding birds. Navigates on public and private road systems without direct supervision. Locates off-road study sites using compass, topographic maps, and/or GPS unit. Records field data in a legible manner. Enters field data onto a computer database. May assist in proofing and editing data forms and databases. Maintains field equipment and vehicles in good working condition. As required, camps at remote locations on National Forest land. Performs complicated test following standard procedures for the full range of support work in the wildlife management program. Assignments involve collecting and analyzing; developing reports on the characteristics and quality of the samples of the field test; and developing accurate records and making presentation of findings. Depending on the duties assigned, the incumbent may be required to have normal color vision, normal hearing, and have a valid state driver’s license.

Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the eligibility and qualifications requirements as defined below by the closing date of the announcement. Provide course descriptions as necessary. GS-05: Applicants must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least GS-4 grade level; OR a bachelor's degree or 4 years of successfully completed education above high school (120 semester/180 quarter hours) with major study or at least 24 semester hours in any combination of courses such as biology, chemistry, statistics, entomology, animal husbandry, botany, physics, agriculture, or mathematics and at least 6 semester hours of courses must be directly related to the position to be filled.; OR combinations of successfully completed post-high school education (in excess of the first 60 semester/90 quarter hours) and specialized experience. The education must have been obtained in an accredited business, secretarial or technical school, junior college, college or university. Examples of specialized experience include: Providing technical support in a wildlife management field environment by organizing wildlife-related data; collecting field data on wildlife habitat and vegetation, species condition, location, and status for habitat management and improvement plans; and maintaining records of findings or results of biological science tests and procedures. Selective Placement Factors The work performed is traditional hands-on wildlife work. Incumbent may be required to have normal color vision and normal hearing for this position. Incumbent may be required to have a valid state driver's license. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
