The Mail and File Clerk position will serve as a clerk in the mailroom within Logistics, Department of Veterans Affairs, Veterans Health Administration, Hudson Valley Health Care Network, Montrose, NY.

Duties

***THIS IS NOT A VIRTUAL POSITION, YOU MUST LIVE WITHIN OR BE WILLING TO RELOCATE WITHIN A COMMUTABLE DISTANCE OF THE DUTY LOCATION*** Duties include, but may not be limited to: Mail Work: Processes incoming and outgoing mail, including the processing of express mail. Assists in the management of the unit mail management system. Ensures that incoming public inquiries and staff mail is properly opened, logged, read, dated, stamped, and sorted in established categories for distribution to appropriate units and staff. Improves mail methods, procedures and systems such as adapting or changing established mail procedures. Filing Work: Arranges records for storage/reference, scheduled disposition, and retrieval. Maintains and updates file classification systems by reviewing field material in light of ongoing programs or special projects and determining if any materials should be consolidated, have new classifications assigned, or be retired. Reproduction Work: Sets up, operates, adjusts and monitors the operation of single or multiple function equipment to perform a full range of services typical of a print shop, including color copier and high reproduction copier. Reviews reproduction requests for concurrence with guidelines, establishes priorities and advises requestors as to which process best suits their need. Maintains an inventory of reproduction supplies. Work Schedule: Monday to Friday, 8am until 4:30pm Recruitment & Relocation Incentives: Not authorized Financial Disclosure Report: Not Required

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: GS-5: One (1) year of specialized experience that equips you with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. To be creditable for the GS-05 the experience must have been equivalent to the GS-04 in Federal service. Examples of specialized experience includes: to one hundred and fifty (150) or more discrete organizational units with close or overlapping functions; identifies with functions performed within the units serviced to determine the subject matter of diverse types of correspondence and forms, analyzes materials by subject matter content, and perform extensive searches in a context of historical records, determines which of several indexes are to be searched, possible errors in varied filing systems, etc.; awareness of complex and extensive file classification systems to file materials; having skills with a variety of office equipment such as copiers, duplicators and mail processing machines. OR SUBSTITUTION OF EDUCATION FOR EXPERIENCE: GS-5: Four (4) years of successfully completed education above the high school level in any field for which high school graduation or the equivalent is the normal prerequisite. This education must have been obtained in an accredited business, secretarial or technical school, junior college, college, or university. (TRANSCRIPTS REQUIRED) OR COMBINATION OF EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: GS-5: Equivalent combinations of successfully completed post high school education and experience may be used to meet total experience requirement at the GS-05 level. Only education in excess of the first sixty (60) semester hours is creditable toward meeting the specialized experience requirement. For example: six (6) months of specialized experience and two (2) years of successfully completed education above the high school level would meet this requirement. All experience listed on your resume must include the month and year start/end dates. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Physical Requirements: The work requires some physical exertion such as extended periods of standing, frequent bending, reaching or similar activities necessary to set up, operate and monitor operations of equipment. Work requires some long periods of walking necessary for mail delivery. The Mail and File Clerk lifts a variety of light to moderately heavy materials and supplies such as mail bags.
