This position is located within a National Forest. The primary purpose of this position is to perform a variety of duties in support of the unit's wilderness program in the area of recreation, ecology, data collection, trails and fire.
Duties
Plans and implements the logistics of wilderness projects associated with trail maintenance and reconstruction projects. Performs trail log, condition, and prescription surveys.
Serves as team member to complete project analysis as required by NEPA and requests for motorized equipment use in wilderness.
Maintains daily record of holes drilled, trees felled, and number of overhead airplane flights as well as user groups contacted for Limits of Acceptable Change data.
Performs inventorying and monitoring of specific resources for Limits of Acceptable Change process. Explains regulations concerning the Wilderness Act. Inspects assigned areas to determine compliance with regulations or specifications.
Explains or enforces use regulations according to Wilderness Act. Administers outfitter use, prepares reports on conditions of outfitter camps and facilities.
Patrols wilderness to ensure that areas are operated, used, and maintained in accordance with wilderness management plans. Maintains visitors use records and prepares visitors use information for data processing.
Assist agency law enforcement personnel with violation information. Collects evidence and provides documentation for cases of misuse of wilderness areas. Documents destruction to or impacts on campsites. Analyzes ways to educate users.
Identifies restoration projects for planning future restoration projects. Trains crews in wilderness revegetation techniques. Performs routine maintenance at dispersed recreation sites including site cleanup and naturalizing.
Conducts education programs addressing Leave No Trace camping, wilderness philosophy and minimal stock impacts. Oversees routine maintenance at dispersed recreation sites including site cleanup and naturalizing.
Requirements
- You must be a US Citizen or US National.

- As a field going position working in brown or black bear habitat, this position is required to be firearm certified for personal and/or crew safety.
- Executive Order 12564 requires employees designated to carry a firearm to be subject to random drug testing.
- Must obtain and maintain weapons certification, which involves receipt of a negative pre-certification drug test result, passing a minimum background investigation, passing firearm classroom training and passing the shooting proficiency test.
Qualifications

GS-05: Applicants must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least GS-4 grade level; OR a bachelor's degree or 4 years of successfully completed education above high school (120 semester/180 quarter hours) with major study in forestry, range management, agriculture, or a subject-matter field directly related to the position, or that included at least 24 semester hours in any combination of courses such as forestry, agriculture, crop or plant science, range management or conservation, wildlife management, watershed management, soil science, natural resources, outdoor recreation management, civil or forest engineering, or wildland fire science (no more than 6 semester hours in mathematics is creditable); OR combinations of successfully completed post-high school education (in excess of the first 60 semester/90 quarter hours) and specialized experience. The education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university.
Examples of specialized experience include: Performed routine maintenance at dispersed recreation sites including site cleanup and naturalizing. Contacted user groups to provide wilderness philosophy, regulations, and current camp or fire restrictions. Collected monies for sale of maps. Issued campfire permits.
Selective Placement Factors
As a field going position working in brown or black bear habitat, this position is required to be firearm certified for personal and/or crew safety. Executive Order 12564 requires employees designated to carry a firearm to be subject to random drug testing.
This position will be subject to random drug testing and will be placed in the applicant testing pool.
The ability to obtain and maintain weapons certification is a condition of employment in this position, which involves receipt of a negative pre-certification drug test result, passing a minimum background investigation, passing firearm classroom training and passing the shooting proficiency test.

Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

LAUTENBERG AMENDMENT: This position authorizes the incumbent to carry a firearm. Any person who has been convicted of a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence cannot lawfully possess a firearm or ammunition {Title18, U.S.C., Section 922(g)(9)}. A "misdemeanor crime of domestic violence" is generally defined under the statute, as any offense involving the use or attempted use of physical force, or the threatened use of a deadly weapon, committed by the victim's current or former domestic partner, parent or guardian.
