About the Position: Serves as a Heavy Mobile Equipment Mechanic, performing the full range of over-haul, repair work, and preventive maintenance repairs on heavy duty mobile equipment and vehicles powered by internal combustion engines. Dispatches and operates Materials Handling Equipment (MHE), Tactical Wheeled Equipment, and Power Generation Equipment at various sites to meet cargo movement operations.

Duties

Perform the full range of over-haul, repair work, and preventive maintenance repairs on heavy duty mobile equipment and vehicles powered by internal combustion engines (gasoline, diesel or multi-fuel). Repair construction, industrial and combat equipment, i.e. forklifts, transporters, warehouse tractors, container handlers, cranes, front end loaders, bulldozers, road graders, tractors, large trucks, hydraulic lifts, trailers, accessory equipment. Dispatch and operates Materials Handling Equipment (MHE), Tactical Wheeled Equipment, and Power Generation Equipment. Diagnose and repair all types of failures in electrical systems (12 and 24 volts), including ignition, lighting and power circuits, using various devices and testing equipment. Trace circuits, checks control boxes, generators, distributors, motors, magnetos, and coils as well as magnetic, hydraulic and pneumatic actuated electrical controls. Conduct vehicle and associated equipment inspections using the applicable technical manuals as well as daily, intermediate and periodic preventive maintenance inspections. Post repair or services rendered to appropriate records using Global Combat Support System – (GCSS). Troubleshoot and diagnoses equipment using schematics (electrical, fuel, hydraulic, and air), and computerized diagnostic equipment. Remove transmission completely in order to reassemble, adjust, test and troubleshoot using computerized diagnostic equipment and reinstalls on equipment.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • You must be able to lift 50lbs. This position requires a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter.
  • This position requires drug/alcohol testing.
  • Must possess a Virginia Class A Commercial Driver's License.
  • The duties of this position require the incumbent to possess or obtain and maintain a valid state Driver's License in one of the 50 U.S. states or possessions to operate vehicles.
  • The incumbent will work in a dirty and greasy environment and is subject to noxious engine fumes.
  • The incumbent is subject to cuts and abrasions from hand tools, burns from hot engines, and falls from working on top of equipment items.
  • This position requires incumbent to work in adverse weather.

The work of the position normally includes: removing and replacing components such as starters, fuel pumps, injector pumps, carburetors, spark plugs, fuel injectors, suspension systems, ignition and wiring, brakes, changing/replacing/repairing tires, and testing transmissions; using basic hand tools such as wrenches, pliers, brake tools, hammers, ratchet, sockets and screwdrivers, vacuum gauge and multimeter, and working under normal supervision of a work leader or journey-level employee who reviews my work for completion.. - Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating. Work requires frequent bending,reaching, stretching, climbing, and crouching. At times, works on top of or under vehicles incramped or awkward positions. Performs strenuous work while standing, lying or sitting.Frequently lifts and carries items weighing up to 50 pounds, and often puts forth similar effort in pushing, pulling and depressing of various hand and foot controls. Working Conditions-Work is performed inside and occasionally outside and subject to extreme weather conditions, in cramped and awkward positions; shop area is frequently inadequately heated; work is dirty,greasy and noisy; possibility exists for injury from dropped units and parts, slipping tools,slipping from work position. Inside work is usually performed on concrete floors and involves frequent exposure to exhaust fumes. Prescribed safety practices and safety equipment is used;protective hearing devices, hard hats, hard-toe shoes, gloves, respirators, and protective clothing. Some of these safety items may be uncomfortable to wear or use, and may be worn or used for long periods.
