As an Interpreter (American Sign Language) at the GS-1040-12, you will be part of Office for Civil Rights, Diversity and Inclusion, Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. If selected, you will be responsible for providing a program of sign language classes for employees and managers, as requested.
This position is in the Excepted Service.
Duties
Duties may include but are not limited to: Serves as an interpreter in a variety of settings involving hearing persons who are not familiar with manual communication, and employees who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing.
Interprets for visitors to EEOC who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing so that they can fully and equally understand the Commission's mission and functions, and fully and equally receive technical assistance,
Interprets for employees who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing engaged in specialized settings which may include appellate reviews, hearings, EEOC complaint or personnel grievance processes, seminars and training programs.
Interprets for Agency-wide special programs and formal conferences, Commission meetings and press conferences. Responds to all Headquarters requests for interpreting services and determines the number of interpreters needed for any event or meeting.
Serves as an advisor in the area of Deaf Culture (in consultation with employees who are Deaf) and works with employees who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing in providing sensitivity training to Commission staff for purposes of understanding Deaf Culture.
Conducts an on-going program of in-house sign language instruction for employees, supervisors, and managers. Develops the curriculum and course objectives, implements the training, and evaluates the program effectiveness.

Qualifications
For the GS-12: You must have at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-11 level in the federal service. Specialized experience may include:
Interpreting both consecutively and simultaneously in ASL and English on a variety of topics in a professional setting;
Utilizing a broad range of vocabulary to include legal terminology and EEO-specific terminology in both English and ASL;
Translating legal, technical, and general material for legal proceedings; and
Researching new subjects, developments, and terminology to prepare for various proceedings.
