The employee will serve as the Biological Science Laboratory Technician (Animal) within the Veterinary Medical Unit (VMU) is in the Department of Research and Development at the VAWNYHS, Buffalo, NY.

Duties
***THIS IS NOT A VIRTUAL POSITION, YOU MUST LIVE WITHIN OR BE WILLING TO RELOCATE WITHIN A COMMUTABLE DISTANCE OF THE DUTY LOCATION***
Plans, organizes, supervises, and evaluates the day-to-day operations and management of the VMU including determining and assigning priority of work of subordinate employees, ensuring that assignments are properly performed, scheduling and coordinating activities and animal study spaces among the VMU and other research personnel and the requisition of laboratory animals and related equipment and supplies;
Prepares any action plans if necessary and maintains full Accreditation of the Veterinary Medical Unit;
Schedules work assignments of the VMU staff and monitors the quality and quantity of work performed;
Trains a research assistant as a back-up for preparing, assisting or performing animal surgical procedures and/or manipulations;
Monitors the employee health program including surveillance and prevention of diseases passed between laboratory personnel and animal subjects;
Designs, coordinates, and executes animal husbandry and caging plans tailored to the needs of individual investigators and projects to ensure that the execution of important biomedical projects involving laboratory animals are supported;
Establishes, monitors, and supervises husbandry practices to ensure that all animals are: (1) maintained in appropriate enclosures under proper sanitary and other required environmental conditions; (2) provided dietary requirements; and (3) handled, and maintained in a humane manner;
Responsible for analyzing and evaluating budget impact based on program changes;
Remains aware of existing and potential hazards in handling chemical, biologic reagents and instruments, and exercises appropriate precaution in minimizing these hazards;
Feeds, cleans, and cares for all laboratory animals in assigned rooms as described in animal room protocol;
Coordinates, performs and trains staff on Intraperitoneal, Intramuscular, Subcutaneous, and Intraperitoneal injections;
Performs and trains staff ocular bleeds, submandibular and lateral saphenous blood draws, and tag/tailing/tattooing procedures;
Performs and teaches injectable and inhalant anesthesia on animals while monitoring anesthesia depth throughout procedure or experiment;
Performs work involving operative and autopsy techniques including excising organs for gross pathology techniques (visual inspection and histological slide preparation), postmortem collection and examination of animal fluids or organs;
Provides prescribed nursing and health care, recognizes and reports abnormal health and behavioral conditions in animals to the Veterinarian; And
All other duties as assigned.
Work Schedule: Monday through Friday, 8:00 am - 4:30 pm

Qualifications
SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Applicants must possess at least one (1) year of specialized experience that equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of this position, and that is typically in or related to the work of this position. To be creditable, this experience must have been equivalent to at least the GS-8 level in the Federal service. The specialized experience required for some positions in this series is normally work performed in a controlled environment. Examples of qualifying specialized experience include: research activity or control program work; nursery work that required the growing and maintenance of plants in a controlled environment; work comparable to that with a large dairy farm where production records, animal environment, and sanitary conditions were kept in accordance with modern dairy practice. Farming experience that was not performed in a controlled environment, or experience as a laborer who was not responsible for planning and scheduling his/her own work, but only performed assigned tasks, would not qualify as specialized experience.
ADDITIONAL SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE INCLUDES: Performing duties such as: animal care, overseeing the day-to-day operation of a laboratory; understanding biological research methods and procedures; projecting data analysis, working with investigators on protocols, proposals and manuscripts.

SUBSTITUTION OF EDUCATION FOR EXPERIENCE (TRANSCRIPT REQUIRED) - Applicants must have successfully completed two (2) years of progressively higher-level graduate education or a master's degree, or internship, in a field directly related to the work of this position (any combination of scientific or technical courses such as biology, chemistry, statistics, entomology, animal husbandry, botany, physics, agriculture or mathematics). One year of full-time graduate education is considered to be the number of credit hours that the school attended has determined to represent 1 year of full-time study. If that information cannot be obtained from the school, 18 semester hours should be considered as satisfying the 1 year of full-time study requirement. Part-time graduate education is creditable in accordance with its relationship to a year of full-time study at the school attended.

COMBINATION OF EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE (TRANSCRIPT REQUIRED) - Applicants must possess combination of successfully completed graduate education and specialized experience directly related to the work of this position as described above, to meet total qualification requirements.

Physical Requirements: Work is a mixture of sitting as well as strenuous activity such as standing, walking, bending, stooping, and lifting. The position may be required to stand long periods of time and may be required to lift weights up to 50 pounds for short periods of time. Knows how to implement techniques for lifting and manipulating heavy cages and racks so that back injuries and other injuries related to lifting are prevented.
