This position is under the VA Southern Nevada Healthcare System (VASNHS), Environmental Management Service (EMS) and is responsible for the program oversight and management of uniform issuance, distribution and inventory, specialty textile items, and facility issued scrubs.

Duties

Major duties include: Performs a full range of duties related to sewing, hemming, and repairing of uniforms to ensure that all items are clean and in satisfactory condition. Performs sewing activities involving alinements and positioning of material or mending of utility organization items of irregular shapes such as those found on pockets, hospital linens and textiles, which involve topstitching of square corners, or curved edges. Makes alterations in uniform apparel which do not involve changing basic cut or fit of item. Supports the Laundry Supervisor with maintaining compliance of the uniform program. Collects and maintain statistical data as necessary for the preparation of reports and analysis. Work collaboratively with services utilizing ScrubEx and AlEx Machine. Specialty items are properly inventoried and monitored to ensure correct par levels are maintained for facility use. Assistss Laundry staff in the movement and washing of linen. Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: Sewing Machine Operators sit for long periods with continual" movement of hands, arms, and fingers in placing items in position and sewing. They handle lightweight items up to 5 kilograms (10 pounds) continually, and occasionally they handle items up to 14 kilograms (30 pounds). Incumbent will be required to be on his/her feet for the majority of the shift, and must be able to bend, squat, lift, push, pull, and climb ladders. Incumbent will be required to push carts in and out of the linen room and possibly throughout the facility. The work is performed inside in well lighted and ventilated areas. Often these areas are noisy because numerous machines are operating at one time. Operators are subject to possible needle punctures and minor thread cuts. Incumbent can be assigned on a rotating shift if required. Incumbent works in a sedentary environment, consistently working around machinery that can reach levels of heat at 140 degrees. Position requires some walking, stooping, bending, pushing, and lifting (up to 50+ lbs). Incumbent may be required to use hand trucks and dollies.
