This position is located in the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), Veterans Health Administration (VHA), Mid-Atlantic Health Care Network (VISN 6) at the VA Medical Center (VAMC), Hampton VAMC, in the Maintenance and Repair Section of Engineering Service.

Duties

Performs extensive control work such as checking, adjusting, installing, and modifying electronic, electric, and pneumatic controls as necessary to maintain proper control, which requires extensive knowledge of system design and operation. Required to maintain, install, hook-up, modify design parameters, write computer programs, put into operation all types of A/C systems, operate and repair refrigeration, and air conditioning equipment. Recognize the causes of faulty equipment and be able to make necessary repairs and modifications to achieve desired operations, if necessary. Diagnoses trouble or defects in sensors, field cabinets, control consoles, electronic control boards in motor control centers, and determines corrective action. Disconnects and dismantles electronic controlled instruments as necessary and corrects trouble or defects by adjusting, repairing, or replacing parts or units. Required to maintain building Automation Systems operating correctly. Performs the above duties with little or no supervision during the regular administrative work week and may occasionally be assigned to a shift during a personnel shortage of A/C plant operators and A/C equipment mechanics. Have the capability of troubleshooting data base problems from a remote location with the use of a personal computer and modem hook-up. Performs normal repetitive functions of operations, observations, inspections, tests, repairs and preventive maintenance on the Air Conditioning Plant and the Boiler Plant as per standing shift orders and daily operation orders. Controls and operates, thru the Control Center functional components of each of the following: mechanical exhaust systems, auxiliary air conditioning systems for standby/supplemental cooling, heated and chilled water circulating systems. Responsible for starting or stopping of selected motor driven equipment, controlling key temperatures, pressures, humidity and other mechanical conditions, utilizing the computerized control reheat system. Complete all task work in accordance with required specifications and use a variety of standard mechanical and basic electrical processes. Makes chemical test of water systems for the Boiler Plant and Air Conditioning Plant. Make adjustments to water by adding chemicals or blow down to maintain proper and effective water treatment. Works with electrical circuits from 240 volts to 24 volts. Subject to call back for emergency repairs of equipment. Support other utilities shops as need arises. Work Schedule: Monday through Friday, 7am - 3:30pm. Must have the flexibility to work outside the normal tour of duty which may include weekends and holidays. Virtual: This is not a virtual position. Physical Requirements: The incumbent's daily duties consist of climbing, working in cramped positions, and restricted spaces, and moving and lifting heavy objects and equipment in the repairing and installation of A/C equipment. Incumbent, in making repairs and installations, works from ladders, scaffolding, and platforms. Equipment is located in hard-to-reach places and stooping, stretching, bending, and kneeling are frequently performed for long periods of time in making repairs.
