These Materials Handler (Motor Vehicle Operator) positions will be located at the Salem VA Medical Center in Salem, VA. This position exists for the reason of transporting, setting up, and staging furniture in various locations as requested.
Duties
Coordinating of receiving and fulfilling request for the furniture to various patient care and administrative areas throughout the Salem VA Medical Center;
Drives pickup trucks, panel trucks, flatbed trucks, 26 foot moving van, sedans, or a crew cab pickup truck, which will have an approximate gross vehicle weight up to 4,500 kilograms (10,000 pounds);
Utilizes a pallet jack, and other powered movers to load and offload delivery trucks at the Medical Center warehouse and Community Based Outpatient Clinics (CBOC);
Inventories the stock of furniture in designated storage areas, identifies component shortages for replenishment orders, confirms receipt of orders, identifies discrepancies;
Reads understands, and applies instructions contained in various manuals, blueprints, specifications, ect.;
Hangs pictures, signs, bulletin boards and similar decorations/certificates;
Repairs to office furniture;
Installs modular furniture, standard curtain rods, patient privacy curtain tracks, and traverse rods,
Cleans walls, floors, ceilings, windows, fixtures, sinks, commodes, urinals, bathtubs, showers, etc.;
Uses pressure washers and heavy industrial powered and battery operated equipment to strip, scrub, wax, wash walls, vacuum, shampoo rugs, and trash pressure packing; And
All other duties as assigned.
Work Schedule: Monday through Friday from 6:45am - 3:30pm or to meet facility needs

Qualifications

DRIVER'S LICENSE REQUIREMENT:All applicants must possess a valid driver's license to operate various types of motor vehicles.(Please do not submit a copy of your license with your application package. You will be required to show your valid commercial driver's license at the time of your interview.)
PHYSICAL EFFORT AND WORK CONDITIONS: Incumbent is required to drive a truck for several hours to reach the remote location of service. Incumbent is required to stand on hard surfaces for extended periods of times and to bend, climb and stoop, and work in tiring and sometimes uncomfortable positions. Required to routinely lift and carry objects weighing up to 50 pounds with little/no assistance, required to occasionally lift and carry heavy objects weighing up to 100 pounds with assistance. Also performs tasks and other strenuous laborer duties that require climbing ladders and considerable walking. Incumbent moves supplies and physical effort may be required to change tires and make limited emergency repairs.
Incumbent will operate motor vehicles in all types of traffic and weather conditions on public roads and are exposed to the danger of serious accidents. Incumbent works both outdoors and indoors, including areas that may be hot, damp, cold, drafty, and/or poorly lighted.
Incumbent will be regularly exposed to the possibility of cuts, scrapes, bruises, abrasions, falls, and injury from falling stock or mechanized work areas.
Must be a able to sit for long periods of time while driving and is exposed to road hazard conditions on a daily basis.
Incumbent will apply all established safety practices, will report unsafe conditions and unsafe practices to the supervisor, and will report any occupational injury or illness in a prompt practical manner.
Incumbent has regular access to printed and electronic files containing sensitive data which must be protected under the provisions of the Privacy Act of 1974 and other applicable laws, federal regulations, VA statutes and policies, and VHS policy. Incumbent is responsible for (1) protecting that data from unauthorized release or from loss, alteration, or unauthorized deletion and (2) following applicable regulations and instructions regarding access to computerized files, release of access codes, etc. as set out in an employee signed computer access agreement.
