These positions are located in Los Alamos, NM on the Bandelier National Monument. The incumbent performs conventional/typical preservation projects for a variety of historical structures. These positions may be filled for a six-month seasonal period, but can vary due to weather conditions, project needs, or funding. Anticipated Entry on Duty: April-October 2024.

Duties

Be a successful applicant. Watch this 5 minute video to learn how to create a federal resume. Use of planers, table saws, jointers, radial saws, band saws, and shapers. Ability to maintain the full range of hand and power masonry tools i.e. skill saw, electric drill, router, chainsaw, sander, table saw, jointer, radial saw, bandsaw, planer, shaper, floor sander, and surfacing machines. Reconstruct, restore or rehabilitate wood structures. Repair, reconstruct, restore and rehabilitate masonry structures by performing work such as stabilizing or constructing foundations, walls, chimneys, fireplace, and other building elements. Skill in replicating antique and highly skilled forms of craftsmanship using specialized tools. Assist with the inspection of historic structures/sites/landscapes on site to determine physical condition and the type and amount of maintenance required to maintain in proper condition. Ability to read, interpret and apply building plans, specifications, blueprints, sketches, working drawings and building codes. Ability to compute curves, arcs, tangents, and possess advanced knowledge of carpentry and masonry skills utilizing accepted trade methods and techniques. Skill using a variety of hand and power tools such as trowel, float, hammer, pick, chisel, brick saw, angle grinder, and pneumatic chisel in cutting and shaping stone and repointing, resetting, and relaying masonry. Ability to select appropriate stone and mortar materials to closely match historic fabric in color, texture, and composition, with ability to apply selected materials in a manner appropriate to historic character. Physical Demands: The incumbent performs work at construction sites and archeological sites within the Bandelier Civilian Conservation Corps Historic Landmark District on historic and pre-contact resources. There is considerable physical exertion related to actions such as lifting, pushing, pulling, or carrying objects of various sizes, weights, and shapes. There is considerable standing, stooping, lifting, and bending. Because of the multi-faceted craft aspects of this position, work is frequently performed under structures, which requires the incumbent to work overhead or in a stretched, cramped, or awkward position. Fieldwork magnifies the physical effort required to perform the duties of this position and reflect actual restoration project environments. Incumbent is required to perform craftsman work in the investigation of historic structures and in working with other employees in restoration techniques. Inspections may require working in cramped, close quarters underneath structures or on rooftops twenty to fifty feet above ground level. The incumbent occasionally may lift and carry items that weigh 50 pounds or more. Backcountry work may require the incumbent to the job site in remote locations over rough terrain. Working Conditions: Work is performed throughout the Park, where the incumbent is subject to cuts from hand or power tools and danger from flying splinters or chips. In the shop the incumbent is exposed to noise and sawdust in the air. The presence of lead paint on historic fabric may require special knowledge and handling and the use of protective equipment in the shop or at the job site, and require special attention and the use of safety equipment. Work is both inside and outside, in all types of weather. The incumbent must work at elevations from sea level to above 5,300-10,199 feet. Temperatures vary from -20 to 90+ degrees. Winter snow depths may vary from two to six feet with icy driving conditions involved. The incumbent may be exposed to snow and ice conditions in winter and rain and wind in summer. Must have and maintain a valid state driver's license. Work is performed in all types of weather, both indoor and outdoors. Bandelier National Monument is comprised of over 32,817 acres, including a designated wilderness area of 23,267 acres and an 800-acre detached archeological section. The monument was created to preserve the numerous archeological and natural features that hold ancestral and traditional significance to 23 tribal nations. The monument's natural resources have been extensively surveyed and hold some of the most complete data sets for climate transition that exist in North America. Annual visitation exceeds 200,000. The monument is located 45 miles from Santa Fe, 32 miles from Espanola, and 12 miles from Los Alamos. Elevation ranges from 5,300 to 10,199 feet with headquarters located at 6,000 feet. Medical facilities, schools, and shopping are available in Los Alamos and White Rock. Los Alamos has one of the nation's best public-school systems. Cultural and recreational opportunities are abundant in Santa Fe and surrounding communities. Local cost of living is considered high. Government housing may be available.
