This position is located in Jemez Springs, NM on the Valles Caldera National Preserve. The primary purpose of this position is to operate gasoline or diesel-powered engineering and construction heavy equipment. These positions may be filled for a six-month seasonal period, but can vary due to weather conditions, project needs, or funding. Anticipated Entry on Duty: April-October 2024.

Duties

The employee will use a variety of heavy equipment within the boundary of Valles Caldera National Preserve. Equipment will be operated at high elevation on gravel roads with graded curves and potentially steep drop offs. Locations of work performed will include front country areas in and around structures, vehicles, and visitors/staff while backcountry areas will be remote, with fewer visitor or staff interactions. Grading and maintaining parks gravel roads, repairing areas hit with seasonal snow melt and summer monsoon erosion. Inspecting and maintaining all of the park owned equipment. Safely hauling and storing material in various areas of the park on roads used by the general public and staff. Evaluating roads, ditches, culverts, and parking areas for safe use and needed repairs and providing supervisor with details of needed repairs. Instructing lower graded employees on safe operation of equipment and maintenance techniques. Other duties as assigned. Physical Demands: Heavy physical effort is used in constantly reaching, turning, and bending and moving hands, arms, feet, and legs to operate different sets of controls to operate the equipment and attachments. Considerable strain is caused by the constant vibration of the equipment and the jerking and jolting from operating over rough surfaces. The work is strenuous because of the generally larger pieces of equipment and the requirement for more frequent adjustments under more adverse operating conditions. Working Conditions: Work is performed in all kinds of weather, often in an open driver's seat or platform, on hills, slopes, grades, and rolling surfaces. Operators are exposed to increased injury risk due to the larger more complicated equipment and environment that the work is performed in. They are exposed to noise, vibration, dust, dirt, and fumes from the motor and exhaust. Valles Caldera National Preserve is located in the Jemez Mountains of north central New Mexico. The 89,000-acre Valles Caldera National Preserve encompasses a 13-mile-wide volcanic depression interspersed with high-elevation montane forests and expansive grassland valleys. The park headquarters is in the village of Jemez Springs, and the preserve is located halfway between Jemez Springs and Los Alamos. Work area elevation ranges from 6,200 feet to 11,257 feet. Summer temperatures can range from the 30s to the 80s (Fahrenheit). Winter temperatures can drop well below zero. Snowfall occurs generally from November to as late as May. The closest communities with schools and services are in Rio Rancho, Jemez Springs, and Los Alamos. The nearest airports are in Albuquerque and Santa Fe. Housing rentals range from $1200-$3000 for a two-bedroom/two-bathroom place. Housing prices range from $200,000 to $750,000 for a two-bedroom/two-bathroom home. Government housing may be available.
