Duties

Natchez Trace Parkway is one of the top ten most visited national parks in the country. It is a 444-mile recreational road and scenic drive that roughly follows the "Old Natchez Trace" a historic travel corridor used by Native Americans, "Kaintucks," European American emigrants, enslavers, soldiers, future presidents, and Meriwether Lewis. The primary purpose of this position is to interpret resources to convey national significance; connect visitors to personal relevance; facilitate shared learning; support specific learning objectives to meet educator and community needs; inform the public for compliance and safety; support management of natural and cultural resources representative of national heritage; and enhance mutual understanding for individual and social benefit. Interpretation and Communication: Develop and present formal and informal audience and learner-centered interpretive experiences using well-established and commonly known interpretive skills, techniques, and tools delivered in-person and through interpretive media and technology. Conduct basic research on specific topics and synthesize the knowledge gained from research to develop interpretive experiences that are clearly consistent with the strategic goals and objectives of park interpretation. Compile scientific and/or historical research from a variety of sources, while acknowledging the potential impact of the interpreter's bias. Select and organize material to be presented to fit the purposes of the interpretive program and the type of group for which it is intended. Training: Participate in the development and/or deployment of standardized training activities. Mentor and/or coach interpretive programs and products conducted by fellow interpreters through peer-review. Participate in the onboarding and the orientation of new employees, volunteers, interns, and other partners. Support an inclusive and collaborative environment. Customer Service: Demonstrate commitment to providing quality products and services by implementing best practices, processes, and procedures. Work with internal and external customers to assess, address, and resolve recurring visitor concerns in accordance with established procedures. Facilitate a collaborative, proactive, and welcoming work environment. Planning: Receive training from higher level Park Rangers, specialists, and/or supervisor regarding short-term interpretive planning. Duties will be developmental in nature when filled below the full performance level.

Qualifications

All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement-11/13/2023-unless otherwise stated in this vacancy announcement. Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. For current Federal employees, if hours worked per week are not included on your resume, you must submit a non-award SF-50 as part of your application to be used to validate your work schedule and determine the amount of specialized experience that you will be granted. An award SF-50 will not be acceptable documentation for which to consider your amount of qualifying experience. For all other applicants who are not current federal employees, your resume must state either "full-time" (or "40 hours a week") or "part-time" with the number of hours worked per week to ensure proper crediting of specialized experience. At GS-05: EXPERIENCE: At least one full year (12 months) of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-04 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). This experience includes activities such as: Park Guide or tour leader; law enforcement or investigative work; archeological or historical preservation research work; forestry and/or fire management work in a park, recreation, or conservation area; management, assistant, or program specialist work involving the development and implementation of policy related to protection, conservation, or management of park areas or similar operations; or other similar work. You must include hours worked per week. -OR- EDUCATION: Successful completion of at least 4-year course of study above high school leading to a Bachelor's degree (or higher-level degree) with 24 semester hours of related course work. One year of full-time undergraduate study is defined as 30 semester hours or 45-quarter hours. You must include transcripts. You must include hours worked per week. -OR- EDUCATION: One full academic year of graduate education related to the occupational level of studies in directly-related fields such as natural resource management, natural sciences, earth sciences, history, archeology, anthropology, park and recreation management, law enforcement/police science, social sciences, museum sciences, business administration, public administration, behavioral sciences, sociology, or other closely related subjects pertinent to the management and protection of natural and cultural resources. Course work in fields other than those specified may be accepted if it clearly provides applicants with the background of knowledge and skills necessary for successful job performance in the position to be filled. If selected, you must submit official transcripts. -OR- SUPERIOR ACADEMIC ACHEIVEMENT: Be in the upper third of graduating class in the college, university, or major subdivision, such as the College of Liberal Arts or the School of Business Administration, based on completed courses; OR have a GPA 3.0 or higher out of a possible 4.0 computed based on 4 years of education, or as computed based on courses completed during the final 2 years of the curriculum, or 3.5 or higher out of a possible 4.0 ("B+" or better) based on the average of the required courses completed in my major field or the required courses in the major field completed during the final 2 years of the curriculum; OR Be a member in one of the national scholastic honor societies. -OR- COMBINATION EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: To combine education and experience, first take the number of semester hours or equivalent earned towards a graduate degree, in excess of 36 semester hours, and divide by 18 semester hours or equivalent. At GS-09: EXPERIENCE: At least one full year (12 months) of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-07 level in the federal service.
