Duties
The Outpatient Behavioral Health Nurse Practitioner (NP) is a member of an interdisciplinary team that provides recovery oriented, Veteran centered clinical care for Veterans with a variety of medical, surgical, and psychiatric diagnoses in the outpatient clinic setting.
The NP is responsible to the Medical Director and Program Manager of General Mental Health and the designated Associated Chief of Nursing Service for Mental Health.
Travel: May travel to Mare Island as need per Manager
Work Schedule: Monday to Friday 8:00am to 4:30pm; to meets the needs of patient and program.

The major duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Independently obtains medical histories and conducts medication evaluations and psychosocial assessments; diagnose and establishes and enacts treatment plans.
Make arrangements for further care if appropriate (e.g., by entering consults), ordering and interpreting lab and diagnostic tests, prescribing medication, and serving as a consultant to other providers.
Prescribes and provides ongoing medication management of Veterans with different levels of psychological functioning and levels of severity and acuity related to their psychiatric conditions (e.g., PTSD, major depression, anxiety, dual diagnosis, etc.)
Provide management of Veterans with chronic suicidal and/or homicidally; conduct risk assessment and develop safety plan.
Provide services by collecting data required for diagnosis and performing procedures and services.
Obtains and evaluates medical histories, performs therapeutic and diagnostic procedures, and orders laboratory studies and other special examinations.
Analyzes and interprets data, formulates problem lists, and establishes plans for solution of clinical problems.
Coordinates patient care with other members of health care team.
Initiate consultation request to other health care professionals to provide specialty patient management.
Documents outpatient encounters in VA electronic medical record in a timely basis (per Mental Health Product Line policy).
Accomplish other documentation on a timely basis
Instruct medical/nursing students, residents, and other learners that rotate through the Behavioral Health Clinic.
Provides psycho education, counseling and emotional support for patients and when clinically appropriate, provide psycho education for their family members.
Demonstrates clinical competencies in such areas as age-specific care, cultural assessment, and health education.
Counsels patients or care givers on medical problems, use of drugs, expected effects of treatment, diet, and other therapeutic health maintenance matters.
Effectively functions both autonomously as well as a member of an interdisciplinary team.
Respects patients' cultural and spiritual values.
Develops patient treatment plans based on a comprehensive assessment of the patient.
Implements the patient's treatment plan.
Reviews the patient's progress as a member of the treatment team at regular intervals.
Coordinate the process of care with the other team members and other service providers to maximize efficiency.
Assesses the patient's continuing need for outpatient behavioral health care, and plan for discharge when clinically indicated.
Identifies areas for continuing education and participates in in-service training (including staying current with all required education).
Utilizes VHA and community resources as appropriate.
Participates in treatment team and staff meetings
When on-call, evaluates patient admissions, patients requiring further commitment evaluations, and requested psychiatric consultations on the inpatient medical and surgical services.
Perform other duties as assigned by the Supervisor or ACOS/MH.

Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.
Basic Requirements:
United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
English Language Proficiency. In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), no person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English.
Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). The approving official may authorize a waiver of the requirement for ACEN or CCNE accreditation of any degree in nursing provided the college or university has regional accreditation from an accrediting body recognized by the Department of Education at the time of the candidate's graduation and the composite qualifications of the applicant warrant such consideration. OR The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript. (Reference VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G6) OR In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of a current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement for graduation from an approved school of professional nursing.
Master's or Doctoral Degree from a program accredited by the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing or the Commission (ACEN-Formerly NCLAC) or the Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE).
Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia.
Nurse Practitioners must be licensed or otherwise recognized as a nurse practitioner in a State and maintain full and current certification as a nurse practitioner from the American Nurses Association or another nationally recognized certifying body. The certification must be in the specialty to which the individual is being appointed or selected.
Grade Determinations: The following criteria must be met in determining the grade assignment of candidates, and if appropriate, the level within a grade:
Nurse I Level I - An Associate Degree (ADN) or Diploma in Nursing, with no additional nursing practice/experience required.
Nurse I Level II - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 1 year of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelor's degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience; OR a Bachelor's of Science in Nursing (BSN) with no additional nursing practice/experience.
Nurse I Level III - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a BSN with approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing (MSN) or related field with a BSN and no additional nursing practice/experience.
Nurse II - A BSN with approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing or related field with a BSN and approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree in nursing or meets basic requirements for appointment and has doctoral degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience required.
Nurse III - Master's degree in nursing or related field with BSN and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience.
Position Requirements:
A current, unrestricted RN licensure from any state or territory of the U.S.
A current National certification in any of the following: Adult/Family Psychiatric & Mental Health Nurse Practitioner-PMHNP-BC
A Master's degree or higher from an accredited school of nursing.
Meet the requirements for VA Prescriptive Authority.
Current DEA Certificate for controlled substances schedules II-V.
Graduate from an accredited school of nursing recognized by the VA (Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) or The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN).
Demonstrated abilities in establishment of priorities and time management.
Excellent interpersonal skills, excellent verbal and written communication skills and the ability to work effectively in a diverse interdisciplinary environment.
Knowledge of Patient Education (adult learning) principles.
Preferred Criteria:
Two (2) years of increasingly complex clinical practice as a Nurse Practitioner; have evidence of leadership, motivation, and self-direction; have a comprehensive understanding of the assessment and evaluation requirements; be able to utilize databases to acquire clinical information, and work effectively with an interdisciplinary team.
Previous Mental Health experience in the last five (5) years.
Current proficiency in Basic Life Support (BLS) through the American Heart Association (Required prior to assuming clinical duties and must remain current -VHA Directive 11-77)
