The primary purpose of this position is to serve as the senior archivist, performing professional archival duties, including analysis of records for historical value to accession into, and to conserve and preserve for, the operational archive and reference collection.

Duties

Performs professional archivist duties establishing policies and procedures for the organization and management of the United States Space Command (USSPACECOM) Operational Archive and Reference Collection. Provides advanced professional archival research and reference services. Disseminates and protects historical information through sound archival management. Carries out special assignments. At the direction of the Command or Deputy Command Historian, plans, researches and writes historical narrative for inclusion in the USSPACECOM annual history, special studies, information papers, etc.

  • Work may occasionally require travel away from the normal duty station in performance of temporary duty assignment (TDY) to include travelling on military or commercial aircraft.

  • Condition of employment: Subject to pre-employment physical. Required to walk two flights of stairs carrying boxes of documents weighing up to 15 pounds.
  • Knowledge of professional archival management and preservation theory, principles, and practices, preferably with an advanced degree in Archival Management or Library Science.
  • Position is eligible for telework in a regular and reoccurring or situational status while requiring occasional visits to duty location based on the mission directive and discretion of the supervisor. A telework agreement must be signed.
  • This position has been designated as a Testing Designated Position (TDP) under the Air Force Civilian Drug Testing Program. Illegal drug use by employees in sensitive positions presents a clear threat to the mission of the Air Force,(cont'd)
  • (cont'd) national security, and public safety. Therefore, incumbent is required to: (a) refrain from the use of illegal drugs and misuse of prescription medication, and (b) if requested, submit to urinalysis testing on short notice.(cont'd)
  • (cont'd) Incumbent must pass initial and may be selected for random drug testing. May be subject to reasonable suspicion testing and safety mishap or accident testing.
  • Incumbent is subject to uncommon tour of duty hours to include proficiency shifts, rotating shifts, nights, weekends, and holidays on an infrequent basis. (cont'd)

Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards for General Schedule Professional and Scientific Positions for Archivist Series, 1420. BASIC REQUIREMENT OR INDIVIDUAL OCCUPATIONAL REQUIREMENT: Bachelor's degree in archival science or bachelor's degree with a major that includes 18 semester hours in archival science, history and/or in political science or government, and 12 semester hours in one or any combination of the following: archival science, history, American civilization, economics, political science, public administration, or government. or Combination of education and experience - at least 30 semester hours that included courses as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below: SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Applicants must have at least one (1) year of specialized experience at the next lower grade GS-11, or equivalent in other pay systems. Examples of specialized experience includes knowledge of the arrangement, content and service of historical collections and working knowledge of other collections and procedures used to access them; Knowledge of methods, procedures and techniques used to assist researchers and staff members in locating and retrieving documents, microfilm, audio tapes, and other archival materials. Thorough knowledge of digitization processes and standards, including the development and maintenance of metadata requirements. Knowledge of guidelines and instructions dealing with the protection of classified information, the release of sensitive information, and the Freedom of Information Act. Note: You must submit a copy of your transcripts. FEDERAL TIME-IN-GRADE (TIG) REQUIREMENT FOR GENERAL SCHEDULE (GS) POSITIONS: Merit promotion applicants must meet applicable time-in­-grade requirements to be considered eligible. One year at the GS-11 level is required to meet the time-in-grade requirements for the GS-12 level. TIG applies if you are in a current GS position or held a GS position within the previous 52 weeks. NOTE: Applicants applying as VEOA candidates who are current GS civil service employees or are prior GS civil service employees within the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs): Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas: Knowledge of the arrangement, content and service of historical collections and working knowledge of other collections and procedures used to access them. Knowledge of methods, procedures and techniques used to assist researchers and staff members in locating and retrieving documents, microfilm, audio tapes, and other archival materials. A thorough knowledge of digitization processes and standards, including the development and maintenance of metadata requirements. Knowledge of guidelines and instructions dealing with the protection of classified information, the release of sensitive information, and the Freedom of Information Act. Skill in organizing information in a logical and easily understood manner for use by researchers. Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing. Ability to work with a wide variety of military, professional, and senior personnel with sensitivity and tact. PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week. VOLUNTEER WORK EXPERIENCE: Refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (i.e., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student and social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge and skills that can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
