The Lead MST is responsible for the lead duties in the Sterile Processing Service. Must be able to direct and lead SPS personnel and communicate effectively to ensure user unit needs are met on a consistent basis. Must be organized and detail oriented to provide direction to Medical Supply Technicians as to complete tasks in a timely accurate manner. Accommodate special and emergent requirements through consultation and coordination with the medical/surgical professional staff.

Duties

On a regular and recurring basis, lead duties in this position consist of but is not limited to the following:- Distributes and balances the workload among staff in order to ensure timely processing and to ensure that each employee has enough work to keep busy.- Keeps in touch with the status and progress of work, and makes day-to-day adjustments in accordance with established priorities.- Reports on expected time of completion of work, and maintain records of work accomplishments and time expended. Prepares production reports as requested.- Instruct employees in specific tasks and job techniques and make available written instructions and reference materials as necessary.- Provides on the job training to new employees.- Maintains current knowledge and answer questions of other employees on procedures, policies, directives, etc. May obtain needed information or decisions from the supervisor on problems that arise.- Spot checks work in progress and assists in reviewing completed work to see that instructions, work sequences, procedures, methods and deadlines have been met.- Amend or reject work not meeting established standards. Refers to the supervisor questions or issues not covered by standards and/or problems in meeting performance standards.- Monitors working conditions such as seating, ventilation, lighting, safety, etc.- May inform employees of available services and employee activities.- Will resolve simple, informal complaints of employees, but refer other situations to the supervisor.- Reports to the supervisor on performance, progress and training needs of employees.- Reports on behavior problems. Qualifications

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 10/31/2023. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Must be proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with chapter 3, section A, paragraph 3j, part II. Six months of experience that demonstrates the applicant's ability to perform the work or provides an understanding of the work; or One year above high school that included at least 6 semester hours in health care related courses such as sterile processing, nursing assistant, hospital corpsman, and operating room and surgical technician courses or other courses related to the position; or Equivalent combination of experience and education are qualifying for entry level for which both education and experience are acceptable. Foreign Education: To be creditable, education completed outside of the U.S. must have been submitted to a private organization that specializes in the interpretation of foreign educational credentials and such education must have been deemed at least equivalent to that gained in conventional U.S. Programs. Grade Determinations: In addition to the above Basic Requirements - Medical Supply Technicians for Sterile Processing must also meet the requirements for the GS-7 grade level:(a) Experience. One year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level.(b) Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities. In addition to the experience above, the candidate must demonstrate the following KSAs: Ability to instruct staff on the correct procedures and protocols for completing assignments. Skill in communication with staff to ensure compliance with written directives, rules and regulations. Skill in interpersonal relationships in dealing with employee, team leaders, and managers. Knowledge of sterility principles in order to instruct staff on decontamination procedures. Ability to lead individuals, manage priorities, and schedule work assignments. Assignment. The Lead MST works in support of the Sterile Processing Service (SPS) management team. Distributes and prioritizes workload among employees in accordance with established workflow and/or job specializations. Assures an even workflow and distribution of the workload. Revises work schedules to meet anticipated and unanticipated changes in the workload. Assigns work to staff based on experience and training needs. Monitors and reports on the status of work. Ensures SOPs and SPS mandates are followed during the performance of workflow. Reviews work in progress or spot checks work not requiring review to ensure completed work meets supervisors' instructions on such things as work sequence, procedures, methods, and deadlines. Assesses the quality and quantity of work by reviewing the cleaning, reprocessing, and distribution of technical medical equipment, material and instrumentation. Provides information to management officials concerning performance issues, assignment changes and task completion. Instructs employees on work-related activities, policies, procedures and goals. Preferred Experience: Preferred candidates will have an IAHCSMM or CBSPD. Physical Requirements: The incumbent usually stands and moves from one part of the room to another while performing duties. The position requires moderate lifting (15-44 pounds); light lifting (under 15 pounds); moderate carrying (15-44 pounds); light carrying (under 15 pounds); straight pulling (up to 2 hours); pushing (up to 2 hours); reaching above shoulder; use of fingers; both hands required; walking (up to 8 hours); standing (up to 8 hours); repeated bending (up to 1 hour); ability for rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously; near vision correctable at 13" to 16" to Jaeger 1 to 4; ability to distinguish basic colors; ability to distinguish shades of colors; hearing (aid permitted). On a regular and recurring basis, the employee alternates between a contaminated environment and a carefully controlled clean environment. In both, the employee wears personal protective equipment (PPE) and clothing as prescribed by OSHA. While handling contaminated medical instruments, equipment and supplies, the employee is expected to wear a cap, face shield, gloves, a gown, an impervious apron, and boots which tends to make the employee uncomfortably warm. The work area is often hot and humid; subject to excessive noise (intermittent); fumes, smoke, or gases; solvents (degreasing agents); working around machinery with moving parts; working around moving objects or vehicles; slippery or uneven walking surfaces; working with hands in water; working closely with others or alone; protracted or irregular hours of work.
