About the Position: You will perform as a Lock and Dam Equipment Mechanic Supervisor in maintenance for mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic and electrical systems at a high-lift lock and dam facility. You will provide methods, procedures, priorities, and time requirements; assigns specific tasks for day-to-day or project-by-project accomplishment; and oversees employees day-to-day direction of well-established routine equipment and facilities maintenance and lock and dam operations.

Duties

First line supervisory responsibility over a staff of lock and dam equipment mechanics, electricians, full time, seasonal, and/or on call lock and dam operators, occasionally one or more temporary lock and dam operator or laborer. Plan the use of workers, equipment, facilities, materials and tools on a day-to-day, project-by-project, or on an occasionally longer basis. As a working supervisor, assigns work to individual employees involved in the performance of a variety of maintenance activities required to maintain lock and dam equipment, buildings, grounds and equipment. Support, implement and explain management programs such as incentive awards, cost reduction, affirmative action, time and leave, overtime and others to subordinates.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • This position meets the criteria for random drug testing under the Department of the Army Drug-Free Federal Workplace Program as supplemented by USACE Pamphlet 600-1-3.
  • MISSION ESSENTIAL STATUS: Individual Districts may determine this position to be Mission Essential based on site-specific conditions. A designation of "Mission Essential" will be communicated by management to the incumbent(s) if applicable.
  • Incumbent may be required to have an American Red Cross Standard First Aid card, CPR, and/or AED in good standing and/or wear a prescribed uniform based on site specific requirements.
  • Incumbent may also be required to have a valid state drivers license based on job-related, site-specific requirements.
  • Incumbent are required to observe established safe working procedures.
  • Appropriate protective clothing and/or equipment is provided to minimize or eliminate hazardous conditions, and its use is mandatory.
  • Incumbent may be required to acquire and maintain appropriate Corps of Engineers equipment operating licenses based on site specific requirements.
  • NOTE: This position may require a pre-employment physical examination depending on the duty location.

I have the ability to perform common troubleshooting, diagnostic maintenance inspections and repair work on lock and dam operating machinery. I can operate cranes, bulkhead hoists, generators, pumps, compressors, speed reducers, and hydraulic pumps. I work under close supervision of a work leader or journey-level employee who observes tasks in progress and upon completion to make sure they are properly performed. - Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating. - Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating. Ability to Interpret Instructions, Specification, etc. (includes blueprint reading)Ability To Lead or SuperviseAbility To Use and Maintain Tools and EquipmentKnowledge of Equipment Assembly, Installation, Repair, etc.Knowledge of MaterialsTechnical Practices (theoretical, precise, artistic)Trouble Shooting PHYSICAL EFFORT: Work requires frequent standing, stooping, stretching, climbing and crouching. Lifts and carries items weighing up to 50 pounds. May occasionally lift and carry items weighing over 50 pounds. Uses coordination of eyes, hands and feet, and also of legs and body in installing, repairing, or testing equipment in confined areas such as manholes, enclosed switchgear structures, or on overhead structures. Climbs ladders and poles. WORKING CONDITIONS: Works inside and outside, subject to changing climatic conditions, loud noises, prolonged standing, falling, water hazards, drowning, cuts and bruises. Works in cramped places and is exposed to dirt, grease, fumes, and dust; works around heavy construction machinery, with and around power shop equipment. Occasionally will work behind bulkheads or in tunnels below water level. Wear protective gear as required when hazards are present.
