This position is assigned to the Utility Systems/Plant Shop under the Engineering Service Line of the Southeast Louisiana Veterans Health Care System (SLVHCS). Position performs journeyman level preventive and corrective maintenance and acts as a technical specialist to other employees and station management staff.
Duties
DIRECT HIRE AUTHORITY: This position is being filled using Direct-Hire Authority (5 CFR 337.201) for this occupation.Major duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Develop and implement techniques for use of specific equipment.
Make modifications and test and calibrate in accordance with instructions and procedures which are often vague and incomplete.
Repair of electronic and industrial systems and equipment.
Use a variety of technical electronic data contained in manufacturer specifications, schematics, and maintenance procedures.
Performance of preventative and corrective maintenance to keep electronic equipment and systems in reliable operation.
Make independent judgments in determining the work sequence, selecting and using trade tools, and testing and measuring instruments.
Maintain moderate to advances working knowledge of a wide range of electronics principles and practices and will be required to participate in continuing education in order to stay abreast of changing technology concerning the equipment in service for SLVHCS, upcoming procurements and ongoing advances.
Thorough knowledge of logic circuits, electronic amplification and control circuits, and of complex electrical, mechanical, electromechanical, hydraulic and/or pneumatic systems.
Work Schedule: Sunday - Saturday Rotating Shifts, 12:00am - 8:00am or 8:00am - 4:00pm or 4:00pm - 12:00am, subject to change based on the needs of the facility.

Physical Effort: Required to push, walk, crawl, bend, lift, and climb to extreme heights while working on, in, and under buildings for sustained periods. Position is often required to lift, pull, and carry heavy pieces of equipment and materials (excess of 40 lbs.) without the assistance of help. Uses various power and hand tools. A great deal of bending, kneeling, standing, climbing, and walking is a significant factor. Position is required to climb ladders and do overhead work. Climbing and working in high places may be required. Some work may require use of magnifying lenses, eye loops and microscopes to accomplish repairs on miniature components.
Working Conditions: Work may be performed inside and/or outside in all kinds of weather. The position frequently encounters extreme temperature changes from hot and humid conditions to freezing cold temperatures. May be exposed to dust, dirt, and extreme temperatures while servicing the controls on air conditioning, ventilation, heating and refrigeration equipment. Works in confined spaces with the proper equipment. The job entails occupational hazards particularly in the handling of water treatment chemicals and hazardous refrigeration gases when making repairs, or when working in cramped hard-to-get-to locations where it would be difficult to escape hurriedly, if the need arose. May be exposed to body fluids while repairing blood banks, morgue cooler, etc. May also be exposed to TB while adjusting and repairing differential pressure alarms, exhaust fans, and air conditioning units in isolation rooms. The position is in contact daily with electrical safety hazards resulting from work with voltage and found in communications equipment, power supplies, and in other such equipment. As such, the position may be exposed to the possibility of electric shock, burns from electrical or radio frequency energy or hot solder, and cuts and bruises. The position is also frequently exposed to special mechanical system safety hazards in working with motor driven systems. A significant portion of work may occur in warehouse area, industrial areas or in variable conditions. Site work on equipment may be dirty, dusty, greasy, or contaminated, in cramped spaces and often from scaffolding. The work occasionally involves exposure to hazards such as radiation, sharp objects, hot objects, and infection. Must be aware of all job specific health hazards and wear the appropriate/required personal protective equipment (PPE). Position may be required to wear appropriate safety gear such as protective eyewear, and/or work within clean room environments where special garments including head coverings, shoe coverings, and gloves are required. Shall inform supervisor of any unusual health hazards encountered for guidance, as necessary. Position entails occupational hazards such as possible eye damage, hearing loss, and back injury.
